Jacket to wear over casual summer dresses

amyannabel · 01/05/2023 20:11

Looking for an alternative to cardigans to wear over summer dresses. I thought maybe a denim jacket but am 51 so maybe not? Are there any alternatives? Dresses are all Seasalt/Weird Fish/White Stuff

Nothing wrong with denim, although not if you wanted to dress somrthing up, eg for an occasion in which case I'd go trench coat, cardigan or blazer for a dress. But I live for denim jackets!!

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 13:33

@Xiaoxiong , they don't have it in khaki! Did you mean the green one?
I'm confused because khaki is a yellowish-brown colour.
The green one is very nice.

Xiaoxiong · 03/05/2023 14:15

Oh I think of khaki as a kind of greeny colour, like the utility jackets! Like an olive green. Is it really only brown?

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 14:24

@Xiaoxiong . thanks. It's a dusty sort of brown, Khaki - Wikipedia, but I was recently reading a book on style, and it mentioned khaki a fair bit, but I got the impression that the author meant an olive green, although I can't be sure.

The book was 'How not to wear black' by Anna Murphy.
The book was ok, but not brilliant.

I'd say a khaki worker/chore jacket! Or in cream/beige, if that suits the colour of your dresses more.

Deathraystare · 03/05/2023 14:29

I have a denim jacket in yellow, lilac and original. All M&, I also have a Ruth Langsford one in sunset red and a khaki one too. I am 63 years young!

Xiaoxiong · 03/05/2023 14:30

Interesting! I think you're right but I'm not the only one confused! https://www.homesandgardens.com/interior-design/what-color-is-khaki

Anyway back to OP's jacket problem, yes it's the green fat face one I got and it's been really useful so far this spring.

What color is khaki? How to use it in your decor

Is it a light tan or is it a dark green? We discuss the question, what color is khaki?

@Xiaoxiong , the green fat face jacket is lovely. Pretty, versatile colour. Neat shape. Pockets. Looks a bit smarter than denim but is still casual.
Off to read about interiors now.

ScribblingPixie · 03/05/2023 15:44

I got one from Uniqlo that was more like a denim utility jacket - strong shape, not floppy. It's really useful & doesn't set me in competition with my younger self, if you know what I mean.

midsomermurderess · 03/05/2023 16:07

I like that navy cotton-twill JL jacket. Denim jackets are ok, just everywhere and dull. It’s the default item, no thought goes in to it.

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 16:40

@midsomermurderess , they are a wardrobe staple but I see people styling them differently, and in different styles and colours.

What do you recommend instead?
I'm not keen on the JL one.

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 16:43

I was going to suggest a jersey blazer.

midsomermurderess · 03/05/2023 16:45

I know the JL one is out of stock but I like that look, the utility or chore-sale jacket. Toast has a few at the moment, eg [[//www.toa.st/collections/womens-coats-jackets/products/birch-gingham-cotton-jacket-bottle-green although they are pricey. I find denim jackets so dull, and particularly so after recent years of midi dresses, denim jackets and trainers.

Our Indigo Gingham Jacket is crafted from cotton gingham. It has dropped sleeves, patch pockets and buttoned hem tabs.

monotonemusings · 03/05/2023 17:11

Whatever you do don't go for a blazer . I like the denim jacket option.

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 17:15

@monotonemusings , not a blazer but a softly-fitted jersey jacket

monotonemusings · 03/05/2023 17:16

@monotonemusings , not a blazer but a softly-fitted jersey jacket

Yes that sounds good. It's a minefield out there!

Trez1510 · 03/05/2023 17:24

I have worn denim jackets since my teens (even when they went out of fashion). My current one (I'm now 60) is from Edinburgh Woollen Mill, and is often complimented as it's quite feminine with pink stitching.

There's a demin jacket for everyone, imo!! 😁

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2023 17:26

The green Toast one is ok, but the blue one isn't. The COS one is too officey.

@monotonemusings , I can see what I mean, but can't find one.
Something a bit like this: Whistles Slim Jersey Organic Cotton Jacket, Pale Blue at John Lewis & Partners

The boxy shape jackets don't work for all shapes

TruthRevolution · 03/05/2023 20:38

I either wear a leather or denim jacket or long trench if its a bit chillier out.

bendmeoverbackwards · 03/05/2023 20:42

OP I’m the same age as you and I love denim jackets! I’ve got a blue denim one that I wear loads and also a cream one from Whistles.

Lots of nice options here, I love the Cos jacket.

FabFitFifties · 03/05/2023 20:56

Well I'm 54 and have several denim jackets in different colours, which I wear.
