Suit for prom?

DS1 (16) has leavers prom in early July.

Dress code is a suit. What type of suit do boys wear? With white shirt and tie or fancier shirt and no tie?

Are normal school shoes ok?

Is one from Next / M&S going to be ok or is there somewhere better for a skinny but not short 16 year old. (DP is also skinny and struggles to find menswear that fits).

We got DS a slim next suit off Vinted for prom last year for £30. There were lots on there that'd be worn once.
Bought new shoes that he now wears for college

He wore a smart white shirt with a tie but friends wore a combination of dark shirts, bow tie, no tie, joke tie etc

Have a look and eBay and vinted

and get him to chat with his mates about what they’re wearing and then decide what he’ll be comfortable in. There was a huge variety at our prom last year, all looking fab.

We got DS1 a slim fit navy suit from Matalan which was lovely and not too expensive. He has worn it a few times since so got the moneys worth out if it.

We got the shirt from Matalan too and I got a tie and pocket square from a company called TiesRus which sell every colour you can think of.

He wore brown lace up brogues he already had for a wedding.

We got DS a smart suit which would become part of his 6th form wardrobe for the following year. Likewise the tie and shoes. Most of his friends did similar, adding touches of wackiness but overall, it was an opportunity to dress up smartly.

If you have a branch of Slaters near you they are worth trying. Large range of suits (it's their main line of business) at realistic prices and they do free alterations too which means a perfect fit can be achieved. It's my go to for my tall, skinny DS now.

Thanks everyone. He's never been to a wedding so his only smart clothes are school uniform.
Sixth form doesn't have any kind of dress code.
I don't think we have a Slater but will check. We have M&S, H&M, Next and a Moss Bros.
Most of his mates are girls but I will suggest he asks the couple of male friends he has.

Look at second hand (or whatever awful expression is used now). It is a one-off occasion. Also I suggest double check he wants to go before spending.

tourdefrance · 30/04/2023 11:18

He definitely wants to go!

Yes, will have a look at vinted, ebay etc.

We are off to get prom suit. He has no idea what type of shirt or tie. 😂

lemonyellows · 24/06/2023 10:59

Or whether to wear smart shoes or cool trainers .....

Or whether to wear smart shoes or cool trainers .....

Good luck. Most lads wore tsn/brown brouge type shoes with their suits, and blue was the main suit colour.

lemonyellows · 24/06/2023 11:56

@RedHelenB thanks. I have asked him to find out what friends are wearing but he isn't giving me much.

Did they wear ties or open neck. Years ago, it was tuxedos which was simpler!!

Funnily enough we bought a blue one in town on Friday!
Although some girls from his school bumped into him just afterwards and helped him find a green one! Might order that too and decide which is best.
Still need to get smart shoes and a shirt.
