Every time I see another epic photo of her I wonder how MN S&B would have advised her to dress …

The older I get the more I think that 'flattering' clothing is total bullshit and is shorthand for 'makes you look thinner'. This is an amazing example of a woman opting for striking clothing rather than 'flattering' clothing and it's so refreshing and much more interesting to look at.

'But there remains an extraordinarily narrow idea of what is ‘appropriate’ for a woman over 50 to be seen in outside her house.'

I agree. And to be honest, you do need a lot of confidence in yourself and your own style to be able to pull off these outfits. Anyone would look awful in the white dress if they were cringing and wondering if they looked ok all day / night

Your comment about these outfits looking awful if you are uncertain and cringing away is key, I think. And also explains why so much of MN recommends "safe" or classic clothing. It's more accessible, with wider appeal.

I doubt Simone would ever think of asking mn, or anywhere what she should wear. She'd just pick something she liked and own it!

Another thing I really like about those pics is that she's not afraid to look serious. Or even cross.

Agree, she looks so great. A real role model.

She seems quite smile-y and relaxed in the CBS interview embedded in this article from last year.

Without knowing more I couldn’t tell whether any particular facial expression in a photograph is the result of a conscious decision on her part or a tired trope on the part of the photographer.

There are in fact many cultures or groups that have a respect and admiration for mature women. In South America for instance it is seen in many of the Andean cultures. And dress very flamboyant.
I am wondering here … how do they transit the menopause period? In those strong cultures and females, do they also carry themselves like that or they adapt for a period until they are on the other side?
I am wondering from a point of wanting to know as I am not there yet myself (but surely won’t be too long).
