Avoiding scar after face op?

I’m having a small operation on my face which will involve stitches. What’s the best way to avoid scarring? Any wonder products? Thanks.

The most important is 50spf sunscreen. Good luck with your op💐

Please don't put anything on the surgical wound unless recommended by the surgeon.

Ask your surgeon for advice.

I would say that once the wound has fully healed, you could massage it with a gentle facial oil twice a day (the Neals Yard rose oil is good) or maybe with the contents of a Vitamin E oil capsule, and then wear a piece of silicone scar tape over it when you're at home and overnight.

High factor SPF every day.

You could also take a high dose Vitamin E supplement to promote dealing.

*healing

Over the last two years I’ve had several small lesions removed from my face, one requiring a graft, and what I’d say is that most of these facial surgeons are wizards. It will look awful till the stitches come out, but honestly I can only find mine when I go searching for them. The areas that had a topical chemotherapy cream rather than surgery are a 100 times worse (and even they aren’t awful now).

Silicon gel and sheets are clinically evidenced scar reduction treatments and easily available. I used dermatix very successfully for a facial wound. You do need to wait until it’s completely healed before commencing use.

Thanks everyone! I’m so outdoorsy this is going to be hard. Any recommendations for covering up when outside?

Kelo-cote - I had 14 stitches in my forehead, not from surgery but a stupid fall, no scar. And factor 50 every day religiously

Not exactly the same but dh recently had a neck dissection to remove lymph nodes and they've stitched it up so well you can actually hardly notice the scar. I think they take more time when it'll be on show good luck

Where will the stitches be exactly?

ohfibonacci · 25/04/2023 20:46

@RosaBonheur on my forehead. About 1cm long incision I think

Yes a headband or baseball hat would be perfect.

RosaBonheur · 25/04/2023 21:40

Yes, that's ideal. Headband, baseball hat, wide brimmed hat, fringe even?? If you had a fringe which covered it you might be able to keep a silicone patch on it pretty much all the time.

SmokyForTheWin · 25/04/2023 21:45

I was told to use bio-oil to reduce scarring.

RosaBonheur · 25/04/2023 22:05

Bio Oil is a big con.

Any oil will do and there are many others which are cheaper and not full of nasties.

SaltedCaramelPopcorn · 25/04/2023 22:08

Silicone scar sheets are really the best thing to use once the scar has healed enough. I had a skin cancer surgery on my face with a flap reconstruction (10 stitches) and can barely see the scar line now.
