Foundation for older, very dry skin

Just that really. I've never worn foundation in my life, never been into lots of make up. But I'm 52 now and my skin is looking more tired and blemished/a few broken veins etc.

I tried a couple of foundations (can't remember which), all supposed to be good for dry skin but they left skin looking a bit flaky in parts even after exfoliating and moisturising and no flakes before applying.

In the end, I settled on tinted moisturiser which was better for being moisturising but just isn't quite cutting it on the coverage front. Don't want anything really heavy. Budget not an issue.

Any ideas?? Thanks😊

Same issue here- at the moment I use La Roche Posay serum then Cetaphil night cream then use Bareminerals Complexion Rescue mixed with a bit of their liquid concealer toward the eye area. This is the only thing that gives me a bit of lasting moisture and cover but it's not completely satisfactory!

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/04/2023 09:15

Following. Exact same situation. I've been using a colour correcting primer and no foundation but coverage not as good obbiiuksy.

Bapbap · 25/04/2023 09:19

I use a laura mercier tinted moisturiser with a bit of no 7 protect and perfect foundation on my blotchy bits. Use a good brush to blend.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 25/04/2023 13:45

I'm 57 and love Hydraluminous by N7. Seriously the best foundation I've used in recent years. That said, I couldn't get my shade recently so got Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra and it's very similar. Buildable coverage, hydrating, but with a nice light glow.

Erborian BB cream, and IT Cosmetics CC cream are also very good, but both have a fuller coverage.

Bunny2021 · 25/04/2023 14:30

IT Cosmetics CC cream is quite full coverage but really good.

Amarni Luminous Silk foundation has an amzing texture and buildable coverage.

Is there a large department store you can visit and get a few samples?

helpmyskinplease · 25/04/2023 16:04

Thank you so much for all the ideas and sympathies to those suffering a similar fate. Yes, I live in London so plenty of dept stores. I'll make a list of everything suggested here and start trying stuff out.

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation or Kosas Revealer.
I’ve worked as a freelance MUA for years and both products are a dream on dry skin 🌸

Chewbecca · 25/04/2023 16:22

How about having a facial and trying to improve the skin? Everything will look better if the skin is better. (That’s what the Chanel counter advisor told me to do when I was there with a near identical quest!). My skin improved with daily flannel washes (just water) & a rich moisturiser (I use la Roche posay). Clarins beauty flash balm is also nice as a base.

user1471504821 · 25/04/2023 16:44

Good advice re flannel, I do this but apply vitamin E oil to all the flaky bits first and massage it in, seems to work well, thanks for the tips re Bobbi Brown and Kosas Revealer

Thanks, I do all that already but I have a genetic skin condition that means I will have dry skin whatever I do. If I didn't always take steps, I'd have constant flaky skin!

I love this too but don't you think the price has shot up? However, it does last a long while so I guess its worth it.

IndianSummer78 · 26/04/2023 04:04

I'm liking a serum foundation from L'Oréal at the moment. I still use my other serum underneath.

learieonthewildmoor · 26/04/2023 05:24

Nars Sheer Glow. Another tip is mix the foundation with a pump of moisturiser.

CeriB82 · 26/04/2023 06:00

i have dry sensitive skin and the flakes stopped years ago when I started putting coconut oil on my skin before bed. With Clinique moisture surge. I also put on a serum (avon Anew). My skin has never been better. Glowing!

mikado1 · 26/04/2023 06:39

I was coming on tobsay IT cosmetics, definitely a glow and feels really nice on my skin as I hate the feel of foundation. I apply a small amount and blend out from the centre of the face.

I recently bought this and love it! I've used their even better serum foundation for a couple of years and now alternate between the two of them.

Estee Lauder futurist hydro.
If you are near a John Lewis with a Beauty Bar, book in there.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/04/2023 07:16

Another vote for Estée Lauder Futurist. It’s gorgeous.

helpmyskinplease · 26/04/2023 08:32

More thank yous from me, I'm still reading and making a list of ones you've recommended. What is the beauty bar at JL? Is it brand specific or will they give you recommendations from different brands to suit you?

Also, another question (so many wonderful experts out there I may as well take advantage!). Despite the dry skin, I've also noticed bigger pores around my nose, spreading to my cheeks. They're not clogged, I cleanse etc but they won't go away. I think they are menopausal?? Will the foundation hide them or should I be putting something else on?

A glycolic acid serum before your moisturiser will help with that. If you’re getting blemishes, use a niacinamide serum.

Thank you, I've got some homework to do all this! 😊

I’m 47 with dry skin and I really like Clinique Even Better. Medium coverage, and buildable, but it is lightweight and goes on easily. I’ve never had flakiness. I use Nars or Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser in summer.
