Fresh hell - ‘Leavers Ball’ for Prep kids age 13

Please help with suggestions of what I could get for dd to wear to this, or where to look. I have no idea! I mentioned the Monsoon Storm range to another mum who scoffed “Clementine wouldn’t be seen dead in Monsoon” so I’m clearly way off track there.

I asked dd herself; she’s clueless, her close friends are all boys but she did ask another girl who suggested she might wear “A nice skirt”. Dd is more at home in Mountain Warehouse than trendy clothes but she does have strong opinions about what she won’t wear, so I can see this being a nightmare.

You could try ASOS or Shein? Bear in mind Shein can take a while to be delivered. I have a 14 year old DD and it's an absolute NIGHTMARE to get her dressed......on a daily basis never mind a special occasion. I'm sorry I can't think of anything else.

Do school publish pics in the newsletter? I'd be looking to see if last year's photos were published.

Leavers Ball sounds like prom dresses to me. Also look at bridesmaid dresses. If a dress is not what she's after then perhaps a dressier looking jumpsuit ?

River Island maybe

3WildOnes · 25/04/2023 07:56

I would look at pictures of last years prom to get an idea of what people were wearing.

3WildOnes · 25/04/2023 07:58

Needle and thread do pretty dresses. But if she is not really a dressy person I would go for a nice jumpsuit instead.

Saisong · 25/04/2023 08:02

Asos bridesmaid range is quite pretty, extensive and fairly reasonable. That said when DD had a Y9 'graduation' event I was pretty gobsmacked by the indecency of the dresses most of the 14yo were wearing (ok I'm a bit hyperbolic, but bodycon style dresses just look wrong on girls that young)

VenusClapTrap · 25/04/2023 08:07

This is the first year they’ve done it so no previous pics to look at, unfortunately.

I suggested a sparkly jumpsuit - I thought that would be right up her street, but she wrinkled her nose and looked at me as though I was mad. Maybe it was the word ‘sparkly’.

Saisong I agree about bodycon. Luckily dd feels the same way.

Hmm yes I can see some of them going for that kind of look. It’s not dd’s kind of thing at all. She’s fairly ‘young’ compared to others in her class. I don’t want her to get mocked for wearing the wrong thing though.

Wait til nearer the time - the girls will all be talking about it at school / on groups and showing each other photos on their phones

Pr1mr0se · 25/04/2023 09:23

Can you look online with her at various sites so she gets an idea of what she does like? Also, ask her what her friends are planning on wearing.

Emanresu9 · 25/04/2023 09:26

Gosh I’d have said Monsoon Storm range looks perfect. Are you sure that wasn’t just one mum who is out of whack? At a nice prep school I wouldn’t expect bodycon dresses.

Foxesandsquirrels · 13/06/2023 08:10

Have a look at dresses on urban outfitters, brandy Melville, subdued, and other stories. It's far more likely that's where her peers will be buying clothes if she's at a prep.
