Kids clothing for slim children

My little boy is tall but small around his waist so I am struggling to get clothes for him.
size 2-3 is now too short however size 3-4 is massive round his waist - actually falling down round his bum.
i think brand that sell a size 3 rather than 3-4 might be more suitable for him but the only shops I am aware to a size 3 are joules and gap. Can anyone give me any other suggestions?

Next was best, though anything sized aged 3 is more like 2-3 than 3-4.
I found a lot of supermarket clothes a bit wider, eg Sainsbury’s and Asda stuff.
Some Zara stuff fit.

Alargeoneplease89 · 23/04/2023 09:49

Must have adjustable waists, so I go a size up and pull the waist in. Places like next, hm etc

Blamunge · 23/04/2023 09:50

M&S and Next often has buttons inside the waist where you can pull the elastic in and tighten the waist. So you can buy the correct size for the length and just use the buttons to make the waist fit.

H&M have been the best I've found but I'd recommend going in store rather than shopping on line - their trousers seem to vary a lot in width, with some being very narrow at the waist and others wider.

ipswichwitch · 23/04/2023 09:51

we found H&M good for slim fitting clothes, and most of the trousers have adjustable waistbands

CatOnTheChair · 23/04/2023 09:52

H&M with adjustable waists.
Failed miserably with joggers, although some h&M ones that are more like teeshirt material rathercthan sweatshirt material are narrow cut.
Shorts for as much of the year as you can!

When you get there, M&S eclxtra long school trousers, and down as far as you can on age, with the waists pulled in.

Petit bateau, polarn o pyret, oilily.

TheGirlWhoLived · 23/04/2023 09:53

Tall and slim I’ve always found next slim or skinny fit the best. Have you thought about girls jeans? They tend to fit tighter and come up slimmer

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 23/04/2023 09:55

Sainsbury's do boys ribbed leggings which works for my son. We stay away from joggers as never managed to get a good leg to waist ratio

SummerInTheSky · 23/04/2023 09:56

My son is just a few months under 3 and he is tall and slim.
I find H&M baby clothes massive and he can wear 18-24m still from them.
Zara is the best in terms of sizing and quality IMO, he fits 2-3 perfectly and it's always perfect in length around his waist.
Primark+ George ASDA clothes are really good too x

Theos · 23/04/2023 09:56

Next next next
their school trousers are ace

Iamclearlyamug · 23/04/2023 09:58

Agree with h&m and also river island, I have the same problem with my DD all her life (now 11) anything long enough is enormous round her waist - her school skirts are age 8 with plenty of room - I'm dreading shopping for secondary school uniform this summer as I'm worried even the smallest size will drown her!

qpmz · 23/04/2023 10:06

Worth trying TK Maxx.

IDontLikeMondays88 · 23/04/2023 10:09

Thanks everyone. I’ve found H&M quite wide but haven’t specifically tried the slim fit stuff so will give that a go!
Also agree with Next being good

For trousers especially jeans, I found ones from the girls sections seemed to fit much better for my slim boys, H&M were especially good.

randomsabreuse · 23/04/2023 10:14

Primark seems to come up slim. My 7 year old has and M&S extra long skirt in age 3-4 that fits.

DS has narrow hips and wide shoulders so he's had a few of he

DelurkingAJ · 23/04/2023 10:14

Joggers were always (and remain…age 8 waist, age 11 legs on my 10 year old) a nightmare. ASDA do long length adjustable school trousers when you get there. Otherwise H&M or carefully checking trousers for the adjusting buttons (you can also sew the elastic smaller on the adjustable trousers if needed!).

souranddoughy · 23/04/2023 10:15

Zara, though we usually had to size down even though the boys were average height for their age (was a while ago though, their sizing may have improved)

And Boden, and some super-skinny H&M.

randomsabreuse · 23/04/2023 10:17

*her darker Primark jeans as hand me downs (anything light coloured is fit only for rags once she's outgrown it)

H&M seems to slim down a bit once in the "children's" sizes and out of "babies" so the 3-7 range is slimmer than the 0-36m range.

Scandi brands that "cut for cloth" in babies tend to be slimmer for kids post nappy age.

VenusClapTrap · 23/04/2023 10:19

Zara

user1471523870 · 23/04/2023 10:21

Same problem here. I go for slim fit from HM and Boden and I always make sure there is an adjustable waist.

JackGrealishsLegs · 23/04/2023 10:22

Watching with interest as my nearly 5 year old boy’s M&S school trousers are size 2-3 and do not stay up, even on the tightest setting. He’s not tiny but just has a minute waist. I need to buy him some shorts for school - should I try Next?

With joggers, we just always make sure they have a proper drawstring. It must be a nightmare when they have long legs to deal with as well though! My DS still has some shorts that are size 18-24m 🤣

LadyGAgain · 23/04/2023 10:59

H&M is all slim in my experience - I have two very slim children (not inherited from me!). Next is bigger so I struggle as they need the length but the width is now always too large.

Verite1 · 23/04/2023 11:44

I had a skinny DS. I found gap and Zara were the best. M and S, next and supermarket clothes always came up big.

MothBat · 23/04/2023 12:20

Joggers and pyjama bottoms can usually have extra elastic pulled through the waist to make it smaller. Gap used to do a slimmer fit as well as a plus (husky) fit but not sure if they still do.
