Sequin Dress snagging

Uselessatfashion · 22/04/2023 22:17

After a bit of advice pls. I purchased a sequin dress with sleeves last week, wore it today and the sequins have completely snagged the fabric on the sleeves. To the point that i will not be able to wear the dress again.

Should I have expected this at the point of purchase? Will i be able to go back to the shop and ask for a refund? (I believe the shop has an exchange only policy, is this even allowed?!)

please help, i paid £110 for this dress and expected it to last for years!

Sequins are evil! I bought a lovely sequin dress for a Xmas party and spent the night trying to free my arms every time they got stuck to the sequins on my body!

Uselessatfashion · 22/04/2023 23:29

Ahh I’ve learnt that now but what to do with the dress?!

This always happens, carry a small pair of grape snippers in your handbag to keep releasing yourself.

I don't think you'd get a refund, but worth a try. Can it be fixed? If there are pulls they may be able to be pulled back.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 23/04/2023 04:45

I'd be straight back for a refund!!!

Have you got the receipt?

greenspaces4peace · 23/04/2023 04:48

Not fit for purpose. Yup sequins do exactly this. Like mini razors on bare arms as well if you’d chosen sleeveless.

Guavafish1 · 23/04/2023 05:02

Ask for an exchange if that is the policy

Uselessatfashion · 23/04/2023 17:03

Thanks for all the responses. Yes i have the receipt.

I went back to the shop today and they said that they couldn’t do anything about it as it had been worn! They have sent a picture to the owner and said that they will contact me by the end of the day.

I’m happy to accept a credit note or exchange if they offer me that but i got the feeling that they wouldnt!

I have just spoken to them and they have said that there is nothing they can do…

I had this with a allsaints sequin dress, I brought it in the sale and loved it, but just trying it on, the sleeve sequin caught on the side of the dress, so I returned it.

@Uselessatfashion was this a consignment store? generally one doesn't mention the "owner" vs the shop manager etc.
if there is a shop manager/owner of the store. i would contact them in writing myself and not go through one of the employees.

Oblomov23 · 23/04/2023 20:30

I have many sequin dresses, and to be fair, they are notoriously known for this. However, you need to hold firm on this, stand your ground and insist that it is completely irrelevant whether it's been worn or not. That's the whole point has been worn and it's not fit for purpose and that you would like an exchange.

It is a small boutique which specialises in south asian clothes.

I have spoken to my bank with the possibility of getting a charge back. This cant be done until 15 days after the transaction took place, in the meantime they have suggested I get something in writing from the store. I have no idea if this will work though!

I will email them tomorrow.

Thank you! I will include this in my email tomorrow, I tries explaining to them that there was no way that I would have known that was to happen unless I wore the dress. I only wore it for 4 hours.

I got a lovely sleeveless top edged with sequins round the armholes and neck. My armpits looked like they'd been attacked by a razor when I wore it.

WolfFoxHare · 23/04/2023 21:43

I’d be going back and firmly demanding my money back. Quote the Sale of Goods Act 1979 that says items must be fit for purpose - a dress costing £110 should be fit to be worn more than once without falling to bits or damaging itself.

Uselessatfashion · 24/04/2023 12:37

Thank you all for the great advice. I have now emailed the owner with:

To xx

I purchased an outfit last week, which i wore once for between 3-4 hours on Saturday 22nd April. Unfortunately, whilst wearing the dress both sleeves have caught on the sequins and have completely destroyed the fabric. To explain in more detail, the fabric on the underside of the arm catches onto the sequins directly on the opposite side, this pairing is a very obvious design fault not apparent until the damage is done, in my case, after wearing the dress only once and for a very short time. The dress is now unwearable. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. After paying £110 i would expect to be able to wear an outfit many more times. This fault in the fabric was not highlighted verbally nor was it stated on any labels with the dress.

I returned to store yesterday and was told by the manager that she would speak to the owner to find a resolution, I was then further told over the phone that nothing could be done as the dress had been worn and it is the nature of the fabric to snag essentially implying that I should have expected this. If this is a known fault to staff why is it not highlighted at the point of sale?

It is completely irrelevant whether it has been worn or not, the point is that it has been worn and it is not fit for purpose. It should not be falling apart after 3-4 hours of wear!

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should be of a satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. My rights have been breached because the item you sold me is faulty (by way of poor design). I would like a refund, exchange or credit note in order resolve the issue.

Pictures have been included for reference.

I look forward to hearing from you with a suitable resolution.

Kind regards

Lets see what they respond with!

Have have a sequin occasion bag and it ruined a dress I wore to a wedding. I only use the bag now when I'm wearing more robust fabrics.
Also as sequins are plastic they are adding to the micro plastic in the environment when disposed so I avoid buying anything with them on now.

Good Luck, good letter @Uselessatfashion!
