Hot flush so stinky 😱

BumbleNova · 22/04/2023 08:11

Please help me! I think I am peri and I have started having hot flushes. When I get one, I swear buckets and I absolutely stink. Like absolutely awful - very strong BO.

At home, I grab a clean top and top up deodorant and it does the trick. WTF do I do in the office?!

I wash with soap and use my usual sure roll on as I have my entire life.

Do I need to up my game and what do I need? It's horrendous and so noticeable. I'm mortified

Try Mitchum deodorant

BumbleNova · 22/04/2023 08:11

Obviously I mean sweat!

I keep a strong Mitchum spray in my desk drawer which I use liberally as soon as I start feeling sweaty. It helps stop any stink before it starts.

Sparkletastic · 22/04/2023 08:13

HRT
Mitchum deodorant
Cotton or linen only
Take a spare top to work - say you spilled something down the other one
If really bad Botox injections in armpits may help

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/04/2023 08:15

Sure maximum protection cream stick not the spray. Works a treat. It settles down in my experience but I remember definite odour changes in peri.

FeltedDogs · 22/04/2023 08:19

I started HRT as soon as the flushes and agonising mental health started. Femoston for the mental health and serixat 20mg for the sweats. All symptoms left me within 24 hours
Seroxat is a game changer and GPs don't mind prescribing it because it's not controversial.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 22/04/2023 08:21

Sorry to be graphic, but is it just your underarms that smell or your groin? I definitely can't wear anything but cotton knickers now as my hot sweats are all over and that means certain points smell more than others - even behind my ears now 🤮

MissMarplesbag · 22/04/2023 08:22

Wash with soap instead of shower gel because the soap really does shift the grime. It's the bacteria that creates the pong so anti bacterial soap does the trick. I use Dettol soap which is easily available from Boots and most shops.

Flounder2022 · 22/04/2023 08:23

I can smell vile sometimes. I use dettol soap on my underarms and Mitchum. The anti bacterial soap definitely makes a difference

MissMarplesbag · 22/04/2023 08:24

Also wash your clothes and bedding in biological washing powder to remove residual sweat.

VincentVaguer · 22/04/2023 08:24

Mitchum is overrated imo

The Sure cream wind up stick (not the basic stick) is the one. And bar soap.

and hrt

1ittlegreen · 22/04/2023 08:26

Buy on Amazon Secret Gel deodorant, only thing that works. Mitchum is not powerful enough but Secret blocks everything and smells really nice.

Also tie your hair back x

MissAtomicBomb1 · 22/04/2023 08:36

Another vote for Mitchum - I use the roll on and it's amazing. Only thing that works for me

DustyLee123 · 22/04/2023 08:40

Wash with bar soap and a flannel. Very important to scrub the old deodorant off.
Mitchum deodorant. Preferably the push-up one in the men’s section, with a blue label. Smells unisex rather than manly.
Wash between your boobs, I’ve still never worked out how such a good awful smell can come from there.
Get down to Asda and bulk buy the liquid talc from the baby section. When it hot, put it between and under your boobs, and in any other places that get sweaty, like belly rolls.

DustyLee123 · 22/04/2023 08:40
  • god awful smell.
dementedpixie · 22/04/2023 08:48

I dont rate mitchum either and the roll on takes forever to dry

I use the sure maximum cream that comes in a box and also use soap in the shower

DustyLee123 · 22/04/2023 08:50

I found the Mitchum roll-on too strong. My work uniform actually stuck to my arm pits !
Get the push up gel one.

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 22/04/2023 09:33

I had this. I found proper soap (not Dove) worked and after trying LOADS of deodorants, stuck with my usual one, but took wipes to work to use if needed. And topped up deodorant.

Also. Are you sure it’s you that is. Smelling? , I found that some of my tops were ‘holding’ the smell of sweat, if you know what I mean. I’d wash them, they’d be clean, but as soon as I wore them, they’d smell sweaty even if I didn’t. Had to buy some new ones.

VikingLady · 22/04/2023 09:39

I take a spare top and deodorant in my bag, and if people comment i brazen it out with "I hate the menopause, 0/10, do not recommend. Hot flushes are utterly evil" then swan past them and carry on as usual. It honestly only takes a couple of tries before it gets less embarrassing. If you're worried about colleagues seeing you differently for it (I appreciate some people are dicks) call it early peri menopause.

jeaux90 · 22/04/2023 09:42

HRT do it now. Before your joints etc start aching too.

Xrays · 22/04/2023 09:52

HRT and Mitchum. It’s the only way.

Houseplantmad · 22/04/2023 10:03

I have wipes at work for a quick freshen up which really helps.

Coffeeandbourbons · 22/04/2023 10:06

I’m going through the same, not menopause related but breastfeeding. It’s twice a day showers, Mitchum and changing top in the afternoon. Sometimes I do a flannel wash as well - could you do this in a disabled loo or similar? You just need to wet the flannel and rub it on a bar of soap, clean the armpits then rinse flannel and wipe away. Then new deodorant.

Hair up away from the neck also helps

BusySittingDown · 22/04/2023 10:07

Apparently washing with benzoyl peroxide (sp?) helps because sweat doesn't smell, it's the bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria.

AnonymousHippopotamus · 22/04/2023 10:12

I second the proper soap and flannel suggestion, and making sure you get the armpits of your clothes properly clean. And natural fabrics.

I saw someone mention seroxat (an SSRI antidepressant) and I just wanted to urge caution. There is still a problem that many GPS will try and fob perimenopausal women off by giving them antidepressants rather than HRT, which doesn’t make sense as HRT helps with the root cause of the problem, the hormones. There’s nothing wrong with antidepressants - many people take them - but they can be very difficult to come off, and in my experience, make stinky armpits worse.

Good luck OP, it’s crap isn’t it? Flowers
