Have mini denim skirts been superseded by midi versions?

I think a lot about clothes and self-expression and confidence, it's something I'm still wrestling with. This skirt:

I don't see many skirts like this around now - the trend seems to be midi length. However many of these have front buttons/zips which can add bulk, and I have enough of that already.

Can I please have some opinions?

I'd like to be myself but be more 'current' - clothes are my armor.

Possibly the most inoffensive and unmemorable item of clothing I’ve seen.

Perfectly pleasant

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/04/2023 10:50

I think if you like that skirt you should wear it. I’ve seen loads of denim skirts on Instagram, long and short. That one is tricky because it’s not really a mini and it’s not a midi either - it’s a particularly unflattering length on me because I don’t like my knees. I can get away with a proper mini or a midi but that above-knee length doesn’t work. You may have beautiful slim knees, though! I don’t think it’s the most up-to-date skirt I’ve ever seen but there is a strong denim skirt trend right now so it isn’t out either.

I wouldn’t regard seasalt as the height of fashion! I buy there and I am 70.

BusterGonad · 20/04/2023 10:52

That's really nice. I actually find skirts with buttons all the way down the front are slimming, for me anyway.

GreatHairDay · 20/04/2023 10:53

Seasalt isn't really trendy, it's perfectly good quality comfortable clothes that are generously cut it's not something to wear if you want to be seen as modern.

GreatHairDay · 20/04/2023 10:54

And I say this as someone who likes the odd Seasalt item.
Buttons down draw the eyes vermicularly it is slimming and makes your legs look longer. which isn't the best look if you have a short torso.

Rainbowqueeen · 20/04/2023 10:56

According to a fashion blog I follow, yes midi denim is a thing and minis are out

thedevilinablackdress · 20/04/2023 10:57

Denim maxi skirts that I wore in the early 00's seem to me having a fashion moment. I won't be revisiting. I like denim and I like maxi skirts , but the combination is too much flappy bulk.

Pahpahpotato · 20/04/2023 11:04

I’m currently wearing a denim midi skirt, but it’s not really like the one you’ve linked at all. It’s the ‘traditional’ denim skirt (so zip and button fly, no buttons all the way down or anything) in a light/mid wash with a front split and a raw hem. I do think midi denim is more ‘in’ than mini denim skirts, but I love both. I have a gorgeous perfectly-roughed-up mini I bought back in New Zealand several years ago and you’ll have to prise that from my cold dead hands, I love it too much to care what’s ‘in’!
Just go with what you like and what you think looks nice on you.

Floisme · 20/04/2023 11:21

They all seem to be either midi/full length or teeny tiny short this season.
I'm sure lots of people will tell you they don't care, which is fair enough, but the point is that you do care, which is also fair enough.

I've never liked that front zip either - irrational because jeans are the same and I don't mind them but there you go.

I've seen 2 or 3 on the Zara website that don't have a front zip but I'm not sure what they're like in real life.
wrap style which might have other issues.

full length but I'd be tempted to chop a couple of inches off.

asymmetric

Peterpiperpickedapeckof · 20/04/2023 11:25

It looks like a useful skirt and with nice trainers, t shirt, jewellery could look lovely. Like jeans it’s a back ground item.

I had midi denim skirts about a decade ago and they are annoying to move in. Won’t be revisiting them. Mini much more practical

sugaringthecrumpet · 20/04/2023 11:52

Thank you for your direct responses (which was exactly what I wanted).
@beetroot you cracked a smile out of me (which is an achievement)
@Floisme I love that asymmetric Zara one, it suits my Victoriana on crack vibe, but I would have to shorten it, and that would be challenging.

I a lot of denim skirts with the most recent being a denim maxi and including a mini skirt and the rest being mainly above the knee. A couple are button ones and both were found at charity shops and both are by Levi. I would suggest not spending a huge amount of you are unsure and pop to your local charity shops and see what they have to offer. Just like a real shop they will have a returns policy.

Thanks, @Niftythrifter

You may all see frumpy, all depends on the styling of it :)

(am I trying to convince myself?!!!)

sugaringthecrumpet · 21/04/2023 07:41

I think that's lovely. I saw it but decided to avoid purely because I never wear heels and it looks like a skirt that blossoms with a heel and would languish with my trainers.
