Make up book / tutorials

My DD loves messing about with make up. She's coming up 11 so still just playing but I'd love to get her a proper guide so she feels 'grown up' and might learn a few things.

What would you recommend?

I was looking at the Bobbi Brown book but wondered a) if it's out of date now and b) if books are still the way or video tutorials are best?

Any ideas or advice welcome

Bloody computer!

I gave my Niece a book by Linda somebody (not her name!) Internet slow and cannot access her last name but think it was Mason. The book was called eye candy. She loved it. It showed the look as a photograph then showed colour stripes of what was used.

I had a load of books myself but was a bit older than her. I loved the Nars book which had photos and then a plastic sheet in front showing diagrams of how he used the stuff. Also loved the Kevyn Aucoin books. These are classics but if she is that new to it it would be best to find one that includes how to put make up on, what brushes to use and how to clean them. Most of the books that would have been useful are quite old. There was a lovely Marks and Spencer one and one by Mary Quant (RIP) published by DK. I cannot look anything up as the internet is slow today. Also back in the day had a lovely one by Max Factor!

I think a general how to book and set of brushes would be good?

Haven't seen the Bobbi Brown book but it would be a great start I would imagine before she delights you with stuff from you tube!!

The Kevyn Aucoin Making Faces book is iconic and has great instructions on how to achieve the looks. It has beautiful photos and is a real work of art.

The Bobbi Brown teenage beauty book is a great starting point and the advice is great for all makeup wearers, regardless of age.

Thank you very much for the recommendations! I didn't know there was a teenage Bobbi brown so that might be a winner.

I just worry the classics will be dismissed as 'old people' make up. Like all of my music. Sigh.

Hannah Martin has her makeup book coming out next month. It's in pre order on Amazon now.

Second the Hannah Martin book! She is on Instagram

I had the Bobbi brown one! Loved it as a teen.

Lisa Eldridge is good on YouTube too

pumpkintits · 19/04/2023 22:35

If she is in to YouTube, I follow a professional makeup artist called Andrea Ali (her YouTube handle is aliandreaa I think)

She is a fantastic teacher and seems to be of the "less is more" school of thought. The only thing is she tends to use high end products so might be a good idea to also look at Robert Welsh? He is hilarious and does a variety of looks with high end and "drugstore" makeup.

I've bought the Hannah Martin one on pre-order!

Hope she likes it.

I'll point her to the YouTubers as well.

Thank you!

Yeah I know!! But if she looks at the basics in a book she can carry one from there on you tube or whatever the youngsters go on nowadays!!
