Is 9 too young to have a skin care regime?

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 18/04/2023 20:53

If not, any recommendations on where to start?

dont ever start. What the point? expense, time, effort, expectations, for nothing other than conforming to the latest pointless fad.

90 is too young to start a skin care regime

I don't think they're ever too young to get in a habit of washing their face really! Gets the mud off Grin

That's about all they need, a gentle face wash, bit of moisturiser if dry and SPF

??!!

I started a "skincare regime" at 9 as my skin became very sore with a few spots etc.

nothing too harsh. A good gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and an spf is a good place to start and not too complicated or time consuming.

I'm not sure what the best ones these days are that are gentle but I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with some more recent suggestions!

You need to wash your face like any other part of your body to clean it. If you do that every night, that's technically a skincare routine. Whatever you wash it with

And people should wear SPF which again needs removing by washing your face
Some people have drier skin which is uncomfortable without moisturiser
Some have skin with acne which is better using specific products

If I didn't wash my face and use the products I do, I would have sun damage from no SPF and a face full of acne

Growlybear83 · 18/04/2023 20:59

I think it's much too young and completely unnecessary.

Marmite27 · 18/04/2023 21:00

My 7 and 5 year olds use a miscellar water on their faces as soap or other face washes sets off their eczema.

I'm the least girly-girl you’d ever meet, but it appears I have infant school children with a skincare routine Blush

Kyse · 18/04/2023 21:03

I started typing out and it deleted so google will find these!

Moogoo milk wash
Cerave cream to foam
Spots and stripes skincare
Sam farmer
Superdrug simply pure or vitamin E range

chocspot · 18/04/2023 21:05

My 10 year old does- it's basically washing and moisturising. Keeps her eczema under control.

Beenhereforever1978 · 18/04/2023 21:08

I wouldn't call it a regime, but both of mine have had access to and explanations of face washes, exfoliants, masks of they wanted them and moisturiser/SPF. This is coming from someone who generally washes their face in the shower and then slaps on sunscreen and hopes for the best.

I don't think it's "Princessy", I've got one of each and they've both had the same treatment. We're prone to oily skin and spots so I've made them aware of various products (as well as a decent diet and lots of water). We all do a facemask together whilst watching a show when we're together. It's quite nice actually to have a huge lump of a teenage boy chilling with his big sister wearing a face mask!

But regime? Nah. And probably not at nine years old no. Their skin is fine then! Are you talking about general hygeine habits to set them up for later on in life?

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 18/04/2023 21:17

By regime I guess I just mean a nice, gentle cleanser - rather than the dove soap she would currently use and a light moisturiser.

She sees me do mine, asks questions and want to start doing her own.

I'd like to get her own products as a) I would be worried about mine being too harsh for her young skin and b) I'm selfish and don't want to share mine, as it's more pricey than I'd ideally like to get in the habit of buying her 🤣

CeraVe seems to be a safe bet then?

I would think just gentle cleansing is all that's needed. Whether that's a wipe with a flannel in the bath or a bit of micellar water, but nothing harsher than that.

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 18/04/2023 21:21

Any recommendations for a facial spf for her would be great too

Beenhereforever1978 · 18/04/2023 21:40

I'm following the SPF question with interest. I've tried everything over the years and they know they have to put it on but they're all awful! Either they melt into their eyes when they sweat or they look like Casper the friendly ghost after application!

It's nice that you're making it special. My son's father said he would 'turn out gay'if he had his own face wash. First and foremost it wouldn't bloody matter of he was gay. And secondly...straight men don't wash their faces?!? 😂

TorviShieldMaiden · 18/04/2023 21:42

I’m 42 and done have a skin care routine. I do wash my face, but not every day, apart from a rinse in the shower

Please don’t let your small children use micellar water.

Ha ha. I had a bath once a week when I was nine. My face might have got water on it then.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/04/2023 21:47

My DD has just started at 10 as she started getting spots. She wasn't really washing her face properly except for in the bath so I got her some face wash and some washable pads, some freederm and a tea tree stick. She doesn't need anything more than that.

OhSmitty · 18/04/2023 21:48

My 10yr old is getting into skincare. I've started her off on Simple facewash and moisturiser. She sees me and her older sister with lotions and stuff and wants to start getting into it, she doesn't really need it yet but she'll be in high school soon and looking after her skin is a good habit to get into.

missmoon · 18/04/2023 21:49

I got my 11yo a mini skincare regime when she started having a few spots and first signs of acne. I told her not to get too stressed about using it, and that it doesn’t matter if she forgets to use it sometimes.

I got her the Cerave foaming cleanser for oily skin (green bottle), and the Cerave facial moisturising lotions for AM and PM (blue bottles, I think they are for sensitive skin). The AM one has some SPF 25.

They work well and she loves using them. I got them in the 3 for 2 deal at Boots.

Surely the question is whether you would think of doing similar for a 9 year old boy? If not then it’s gendered product marketing that’s underlying it, not any real need.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/04/2023 21:50

It's this face wash www.google.co.uk/search?q=space+wash&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

I was 10 when I started using cleansing milk and toner. I didn’t turn into a self obsessed person I just wanted to feel grown up.

I did. He's now a massive rugby playing lump but still loves his face masks and micellar water 😊
