Hair washed and ‘set’ once a week; is this still a thing?

Had balayage and a cut Saturday. The hairdresser washed it and styled it for me too, looked lovely (though I say so myself!) It still looked lovely Sunday and yesterday. By today was a little scruffy looking but would have passed at work, I washed it but I know it won’t look nice tomorrow and if I left it three days would look terrible.

I don’t know what magic she uses but am wondering if anyone else has their hair washed and ‘done’ once a week, not cut or anything? I’m sure my grandmother did! But I don’t know if it’s a thing now. I was thinking if I could get that on Friday I would then be able to get away with just washing Tuesday/ Wednesday. Does anyone do this? And how much is it?

My hairdresser says some do come in for just a wash and blowdry. Some regularly, some just for special occasions.

Buttalapasta · 18/04/2023 07:27

I'm in Italy and I have lots of friends who do this. Sadly my hair doesn't last 2 days, let alone a week.

SocksAndTheCity · 18/04/2023 07:30

My hairdresser told me it's common there too; some people come in every week and never wash their own hair. Proper blowdrying in particular is really hard to do well by yourself.

RaininSummer · 18/04/2023 07:37

My mum's friend goes twice a week for this. I just can't imagine spending that much time and money on my hair.

Triffid1 · 18/04/2023 07:37

My great aunt certainly does.

When I worked with Americans, many of the women would regularly get a "blow out" eg before a bignweek at work.or when travelling, if not weekly. I adopted that strategy for a while as there was a blow dry only hair salon near my office.

OnMyWayToSenility · 18/04/2023 07:37

Wash n set is a process for shorter hair,
Usually permed, tinted then with so much setting spray it's like concrete! curlers and under a hood dryer. Brushed out styled and more hair spray.
They all wore silk scarfs over their hair in the daytime possibly at night too.

The hair would be like wire with all that process 🤣 I used to do these on clients as a hairdressers apprentice back in the 80's

You could get away with wash n blow dry every week. But would need dry shampoo and a wear it up some days .

Now that I'm older this is something i aspire to. I had long thick statementy hair up through my 30s. I loved it. Then in my 40s it dried to a crisp, and I've mostly learned how to manage it but it's not the same. In my 50s, and then the pandemic, I decided to go shorter. I never thought I'd want to have the short styles that were perfect for the wash and set hairdressers of the past, now i would love it.

Plenty of people get their hair blown every week. My sister actually does every Friday and she just washes the top in between and uses a 1 step brush to blow it as she has extensions
I've other friends who get their hair blown regularly too. I only get a blow dry if I'm going somewhere nice or it's an occasion, like Xmas or birthdays

I work for a is / Canadian firm and it is very much a thing there nearly all the womens have very 'bouncy blows'

icelollycraving · 18/04/2023 07:51

All my aunties would do this, my mum stills ‘pins’ her hair up.
They generally had perms, lots of setting spray and hair spray, so although some were v Maggie Thatcher, lots just felt like Brillo pads.
To be brutal, my aunties at 50 seemed like old ladies, people now look younger imho.
I think also showering wasn’t as popular, the steam would kill the set.
A good blow dry is a skill, with straightening, a lot of hairdressers don’t have the same skills for a great long lasting blow dry.

Christmashope19 · 18/04/2023 07:57

I have super fine hair that gets greasy within hours
since covid I have tried to wash it every second day and its just ok
would love to get it washed and dried at the hairdressers and for it to last even 3-4 days!

ShippingNews · 18/04/2023 08:01

I've always done my own hair , once a week shampoo and blow dry. But lately I just can't do it, due to having a frozen shoulder joint. So I get a weekly shampoo and blow dry, what a relief!

MissSmiley · 18/04/2023 08:03

My mum used to have a set and dry with her permed hair, she's been going to the hairdresser every Friday since she was 16, she's in her 70s now and has a sleek silver bob and never washes her her at home, she has it washed and blow dried every week at the salon, I know she's pays £13 for this, just gone up from £12, it takes less than 15 minutes believe it or not!!

ExtremelyDetermined · 18/04/2023 08:06

Honestly, I’d love to do this if funds permitted (£13 sounds pretty reasonable!).

ThoseDamnCrows · 18/04/2023 08:07

My hairdresser has a loyal group of older ladies who go in once a week for their wash and blow.
In Liverpool salons do a 'curly blow' when you want glossy bouncy curls for your night out.

Myjobisanightmare · 18/04/2023 08:19

Mil did this twice a week for certainly the 20y I knew her and many years previously she was very high maintenance in terms of hair and clothes not so much skincare and face don’t think she was happy with her looks hence so much effort elsewhere

whitesnowflake · 18/04/2023 08:19

My DM did this, once a week at the hairdressers. Her side of the family have exceptionally thick, wavy hair. It's a completely different texture from my hair which needs washed every second day. When my DM has been ill with cancer and her dementia meant she suddenly hated getting her hair washed, her hair has gone well over a week or even 2 without being washed and still looked amazing! It just never gets greasy. Unfortunately the amazing hair gene passed me but I have a cousin who is the same age as me and she has inherited it.

Phoebo · 18/04/2023 08:21

I usually wash my hair about every 5 days, it stays nice, could probably go longer if I needed. Usually looks the best on about day 3. I have long, really thick hair.

MrsHsGirl · 18/04/2023 08:23

My grandma does, she's had hers done every Friday morning for something like 45 years 😂 she genuinely didn't know what to do when she had to do it herself during lockdown

turtlemurtle1982 · 18/04/2023 08:23

My mum does this- wash and blow dry and it lasts a week. She has short blonde bobbed hair which is quite dry so doesn't get greasy. Wouldn't last in my hair though.

SisterAgatha · 18/04/2023 08:24

A place near me does a monthly subscription so you pay x for unlimited blow dries. Not worth it for me as I wash it very rarely but for those who would use it every other day etc, great value

Billyhargrovesmullet · 18/04/2023 08:25

When I was at college last year we had ladies coming in every week for wash & set or blow dry and I wash & set my elderly mums once a week for her

Mrsjayy · 18/04/2023 08:28

I go to what would be considered an old lady hairdressers 😃 and they are rammed on a Friday with .shampoo and sets/blow drys .

Shimmeringshine · 18/04/2023 08:28

I probably couldn’t get away with a wash just once a week, but if I had my hair washed and dried ‘properly’ on Friday it would probably last until Tuesday. Then I could hang on with my own crap skills until Friday. I’ll have to find out how much it is.

I go once a fortnight (I would go weekly time allowed)

It has made so much difference. I have a medical condition that means I find it very hard to brush my hair though, so before I started doing this I had horrible times when my hair would get in a horrific state
