I got an absolute shock yesterday when I saw my widows hump

Can I do anything about it, any positive stories?

Apparently the widows hump is caused by bad posture, however there is a similar condition which can be caused by medical conditions such as Cushing's. You need to see a doctor to see which one you have.

Completely depends upon what's caused it - posture/lack of muscle strength or steroid use/medical condition (or actually just putting on a lot of weight with either of both of these).

I had one forming when I was on a lot of steroids and in a lot of pain, but as soon as I moved onto biologics, the absence of steroids and the ability to strengthen my back muscles and improve my posture whilst losing weight meant it completely disappeared over the following months.

I developed one slowly without realising - my teenage daughter noticed it one day ! Caused by neglecting myself, busy family life, holding stress in my upper back. It was all postural - disappeared after I lost some weight (a stone) and started Pilates and online Yoga. Stretching exercises worked wonders. It’s gone now

Noodle421 · 16/04/2023 13:57

I was around your age when mine appeared !

Adrienne ( not sure if spelling is correct) does loads of excellent free online yoga classes. Some of them are only 15 mins long. You can choose to home in on problem areas. I did a lot of her neck and shoulder classes.

StraightHairDonCare · 16/04/2023 14:24

There are exercises for them on youtube and weight loss helps a lot.

In yoga we were shoe a very easy thing
Get a yoga block or rolled up towel etc. Put it under your upper back, bra strap area. Lie back and let your head and shoulders just flop, they will gravitate to the floor and stretch everything back. This is the opposite to the usual hunching over that we all do

PollyIndia · 16/04/2023 14:30

Definitely Pilates. We are all evolving to have a neck forward, rounded spine position due to phones and computers, but pilates will help correct this. The hump, assuming postural, is kyphotic. You need to work on stabilising, lengthening and strengthening your spine, opening up your chest, and work on your deep core.
You can definitely stop this in its tracks at your age with the right exercise programme, I'm sure.

I've just realised on reading this thread that I have this too! Cheers OP 😂

Would regular swimming help, do you think?

Madamecastafiore · 16/04/2023 19:41

You need to strengthen all your upper back muscles and stretch your chest muscles if it is down to posture and nothing more sinister.

Just google how to fix it and they'll be lots of programs online.

Thanks all. I must admit my upper body strength is crap but I do pilates already. @Dappy55

That makes sense thank you.
