Gah! Grey hairs!

I’m 38 and for the past couple of years have had a few greys here and there that have been easy to cover. Over the past month I’ve seemed to have gotten LOADS.

My hair is a mousy light brown normally, and I box dye it a medium brown but the greys are showing through after a week! Firstly is there a box dye that actually works? Secondly, will going lighter help disguise the greys? I don’t want to fork out for a trip to the hairdresser if going lighter won’t make a difference.

Anyone?

I would recommend going lighter as it does disguise grey better. I have brown hair but have been getting highlights for years, and more recently a base colour that would have matched my natural colour. I have had to ask for my base colour to be lightened a bit because the darker base colour was starting to show up the grey terribly. You could go lighter all over or get some highlights where you can see the roots come in?

Thank you for replying, I didn’t think of starting with highlights!

I'm the same age and have really stubbon grey white hairs that come through my brown hair. During lockdown when the hairdresser was closed I used a cheap box dye called Schwarzkopf Poly Color Tint which is £2 in Tesco. It covers the grey/white brilliantly, better than what I was paying in the hairdressers and it's so cheap. A tip is to leave it on for longer if the grey is really stubbon and use a tint brush (you can buy them in Poundland) to really get into the root.

I have black hair and my white hairs are really noticeable. I ended up getting a full head of high lights which made such a difference but I couldn't afford the upkeep so had to stop. If you can afford to do this I'd recommend it. I also recommend the Schwarzkopf dye mentioned above but I do get fed up box dying.

Ive recently started using John Frieda defy grey shampoo. It's turned my greys a sort of blonde shade. It doesn't look good against my black hair as it's just random blonde strands all over. I think it would look good on lighter hair though or hair that has more grey than black.

Is it that the colour is fading from the grey hair, or just that the roots are growing through visibly? If the latter root spray works really well on light brown hair.

Also, there are similar threads below so there might be more suggestions for you - some people avoid highlights as they can damage your hair, I haven’t found that personally and been getting them for 20 years..

It’s the colour fading and not really taking to the greys I think, the full length greys are showing not just the roots.

Its crazy how quickly I’ve gone from one or two, to what seems like hundreds!
