My hair used to be straight, now it's wavy, help please

Until the age of 38 I had straight hair, all it needed was blowing with the hairdryer and straightening for a smoother look. I had lots of hair so despite the fact it took a while to dry it was always easy to do. I've never been a hair person, straight or a pony or half up half down was the extent of my hair talents!

Then I became ill and had several courses of medication which meant I lost a lot of hair (i'm much better now). Fast forward to today, the hair I lost has grown back but it's curly/wavy. I have no idea what to do with it, I absolutely can't leave it to air dry as it ends up a mess, if I simply blow dry it ends up bushy and frizzy, but I don't want to straighten it after every wash. How do I care for this? And how do I make the most of the waves? I had a very unsuccessful attempt with a diffuser recently and I need guidance please.

I have wavy hair which has recently become very frizzy and crap looking no matter what I do to it!

I've just bought some wavy girl method type products and have ordered a diffuser attachment for my hairdryer.

I am hoping this will be the answer to all my hair prayers! I can report back if you like. Just ordered it today so can't say yet

This is left to dry naturally...

I think it looks great like that! Mine looks as if I've been electrocuted if I don't take care with it.

I know you have been ill, (glad to read you are better btw!), but I am 39 so v similar age. I wonder if it may partly be our age... Another lovely bonus to getting older 😆

You might find that it doesn't stay curly.
I lost a lot of hair due to alopecia areata and when it eventually grew back it was curly and a bit wild. I didn't mind as I was so relieved to have it! After a while it calmed down and now, a couple of years on, it's back to its normal flat boring self!

catzrulz · 15/04/2023 12:13

Last year I had Chemo and lost my hair, it's now really wavy since it's grown back.
I use mousse, scrunch it in (loads of videos on youtube) and either leave it to dry or diffuse it. Mine is still quite short so dries in minutes, but stays in shape which is great.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 15/04/2023 16:09

Have a look at the curly girl method, there are a couple of FB groups for curlies and wavies. It looks beautiful but i get your frustration as mine is 3/4 wavy and straight bits with the odd curlier strand 🤣. If you are air drying scrunch in a little bit of light conditioner. Curly/wavy hair tends to be drier.

mybeautifuloak · 15/04/2023 16:37

Your hair looks amazing. Not frizzy really. Just beautiful waves. Try raking through a leave in conditioner and air dry or dry with a diffuser.

I've recently discovered that my hair is curly now. The condition was poor (high porosity, frizzy) until I was introduced to Anwen products. They are a Polish brand. You can get some of their products on Amazon but this site seems to have a larger range. This leave in treatment for the curls is lovely.

The products appear to be oil based and reasonably priced.

Since I became greyer and greyer, it's got more and more wavy. I have course hair too. I think it's genetics because my mum has straight hair and my dad had curly course hair. I don't do much with it now, I can't cut it short because it ends up as a mess, and as long it just...hangs..even with layers. So I always wear it up. I use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner and occasionally use a heat protective spray to prevent frizzing.

champagneplanet · 15/04/2023 19:16

This was the result with a diffuser. Do you think a good cut might help? It felt very bushy and frizzy, just a mess basically.

Following for tips! Peri frizz here. Plus my sudden Covid white hairs around the hairline are much curlier than the rest of my hair, which looks odd.

TakeMe2Insanity · 15/04/2023 19:57

I had extremely straight hair, then multiple ivfs and then my hair became frizzy like yours. if I just blow dry it as I use to (with a hair dryer and combing no styling) instead of waking up with glass straight hair I now have a mass of helter skelter lopsided curls and straight patches.

I do the following, dry using an argan oil heat treatment oil. Try and dry my hair as neatly as possible. When dry I spray in a leave in conditioner which seems to tame the curls so the whole head looks similar and less patchy.

Xrays · 15/04/2023 20:01

My hair is almost identical to yours. And also turned that way after medication- mine was steroids and methotrexate for lupus. If you want more defined curls scrunch some sort of curl cream through it when it’s damp - my favourite is imbues pot of it or frizz ease curl creme. Then use a wide toothed comb to comb through and encourage curl clumps. Then scrunch. Then diffuse.

Xrays · 15/04/2023 20:03

This is mine after some curl creme and diffusing -

Ugh this is my hair too, plus a halo of post-partum hair loss regrowth. Can’t find any curly cut places near me :( sick of looking a mess!!
Curly Girl is too much for my hair - just makes my hair so lank. I recently got some frizz-ease serum but only helps a bit.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 15/04/2023 20:04

Omg @Xrays , gorgeous!

Omg @Xrays , gorgeous!

Thank you, that’s really kind ❤️

I drive myself mad with my hair most days. But I’m getting there! Curly girl stuff as a whole doesn’t suit me either, too heavy. And I prefer normal shampoos as my hair is fine and needs a proper clean.

greenspaces4peace · 15/04/2023 20:17

Nice healthy looking hair @champagneplanet
try some curly girl methods, request a sample of the Diva curl conditioner to wash your hair with, then request a sample of Moroccan oil curl cream to scrunch a bit.
I say samples first, it can take some trial and error to get the right combo.

princesssugarless · 15/04/2023 21:04

Mine went like yours after the joys of children. I use this got2b beach waves spray if I am leaving it to air dry. Otherwise mine is frizz central too

champagneplanet · 16/04/2023 10:01

Thank you everyone.

@Xrays yes it was mainly steroids to blame! Your hair looks lovely.

I think im going to try some of the tips on here and also get a decent cut.

I see a lot of ads for Only Curls, and similar products, but it looks like a lot of work and I wonder if it's just good marketing.
