Do silicone free hair shampoos etc cause dandruff?

I've used regular shampoo forever and never had dandruff or scalp issues. I'm using silicone free products now for couple weeks and my scalp is horrible. Itchy and dandruff! Is it the shampoo. Is it normal? should i persevere and it will go back to the way it was????

Do you mean SLS/sulphate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner/styling products? If so, yes, possibly, shampoos without sulphates aren't as good with removing build up on your scalp so it's good to use a hard core clarifying (ideally chelating as well if you're in a hard water area) now and again, kind of depends on how often you wash your hair.

As for whether you should persevere, kind of depends on why you're using sulphate/silicone free. I don't use silicones because my hair is very prone to build-up but otherwise I'd happily use them. Sulphates, I've tried going sulphate free and I'm not convinced disavowing them does anything magical, I prefer a mixed approach, if my hair is on the grimey side I'll grab a gentle sulphate shampoo if it's feeling a bit parched I'll go for sulphate free.

I never had an issue switching over to SLS free and silicone products. My hair is super dry, and SLS free is definitely better for my hair type. I use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove product build-up. A scalp brush also works well.

There’s often a ‘transition’ period with going to more natural hair products. Things I have found help are: a vinegar rinse between shampoo and conditioner (you can find recipes for homemade vinegar rinses with soaking orange peel etc so it doesn’t smell chip shop-like!) and a hair oil mask overnight once a week or so.

ok Thank you for all your replies.

I'm glad i'm not going mad. My hair is really dry and scalp is dry and itchy since moving. My hairdresser is clearly full of mad dogs shite! She said they were the way forward much better for your hair and soon would be the only products on the market.

I'm a gullible eejit!

They are supposed to be much better and less harsh on the skin. Your hairdresser isnt wrong there.
Ive only used silicone free the last few years and never had any issues. Dandruff and itchy scalp sounds more like a reaction to an ingredient, than a reaction to an ingredient missing. Maybe youre allergic to something in that particular shampoo? Have you tried more than one brand?
