I am 52. Now to get glowy skin

I cleanse, tone and moisturise. I scrub twice a week and I also use a facial oil at night a couple of times a week yet my skin looks dull. I’ve tried hyaluronic acid. Did nothing for me.

I have my own central heating and my flushes do occasionally cover my face. I don’t want to look sweaty. Just glowy and healthy.

The reason your skin isn't looking glowy is that basically the top layers of your skin are made up of dead skin cells, which are never going to look very glowy. As we get older and our metabolism slows down the skin cell cycle slows down and dead skin cells accumulate and make our skin look dull and uneven.

You need some 'active' ingredients in your skincare which will penetrate to the deeper layers of skin and actually do something, like exfoliating these layers off and encouraging newer skin cells to the surface.

My glowy skin came from using these active ingredients in my skincare - vitamin c serum, retinol and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs).

Retinol increases cellular turnover, which basically sloughs off dead skin cells on the surface of your skin allowing the newer skin cells to show. It's one of the best ingredients to use on your skin.

Vitamin C serum brightens and evens the skin, and over time can help with things like pigmentation.

AHAs are liquid exfoliants which also help to remove dead skin cells by dissolving the 'glue' that holds these dead skin cells together. If you have oily skin try a BHA instead.

All of them can be a bit irritating to use at first, so I would introduce them slowly be patient as it can take some time to see good results.

Also, do you use any sunscreen? If not then you should, especially if you are going to use active ingredients, as you need to protect your skin from sun damage.

Do you have any advice please on how I could build in AHA to a routine if I already use tret every other night? Should I use it on the nights I don’t use tret? Or in the mornings? My skin can be quite sensitive so I don’t want to overload it! Thank you

@princessbear80
Sorry i know you were asking Farmageddoh but I used to try and add aha with Tret and it damaged my skin barrier and I had to stop for a month. I now never exfoliate and the Tret works fine. I do use a flannel at night with oil Cleanser and that gives mild physical exfoliation, I find that's enough

@doadeer thanks! 😊

I've switched to only using Aldi skincare after years of trying various things.
I've been asked more than once recently if I've had Botox (I haven't) and my skin looks better than it has done for years (I'm 52)

I'm a bit scared of tret but keen to know more!

You’ve had a lot of good advice on here about skincare but I would like to add faking it until you make it.

You don’t mention wearing make up. There are hundreds of products that will give you a glow ranging from full coverage foundations to barely visible CC /BB creams as well as many many highlighters / bronzers / blushers etc with costs ranging from about £3 to three figures.

if you are interested in makeup find a range at a price point that suits you and visit a counter try some out.

If you don’t want to wear makeup you could try NYX dewy finishing spray. It’s designed to be worn over make up but in the interests of scientific research I used it over just SPF this morning and can report I am very glowy ( although not as even toned as I would be with a light base under it).

From the inside;

Loads of water, fruit and veg, and exercise.

From the outside;

Exfoliation, tret.
Then, I have a number of glow products including Nars Radiance Primer, and Hollywood Flawless Filter by Charlotte Tilbury.

Someone actually came up to me a while ago and asked me what I used to glow so much and it was the Charlotte Tilbury products.

Honestly, I don't actually use AHAs that often anymore, maybe every two weeks or so at a push, as I'm using tretinoin for a few years and that has exfoliating effects and acts as a pretty good exfoliator all by itself.
If I use and AHA too often I think it just dries out my skin or can make things a bit too irritated.

You could always try it once a week and see how you get on. Like I say I still use it (sparingly) but I'm not sure how much it's actually doing versus the tretinoin (which is doing the heavy lifting really).

I was recommending AHAs to the OP to start off with, because before I started on tretinoin and was just using over the counter retinol I used a good AHA (Paulas Choice I think) and I did notice it gave a good glow to my skin.

Thank you! I may just stick with tret then.

OP, you need to start gently. I would go for a moisturiser at night with retinol but a low dose and a AHA or BHA exfoliating toner like those from Paula's Choice so your skin is smoother. Then use make-up profits to get that glory look- an illuminating primer and powder- Laura merrier is good for these!

FancyFanny · 15/04/2023 12:00

Arrrgh! A few silly auto-corrects crept in there but I'm sure you know what it was meant to say!

AchillesHeelys · 15/04/2023 12:04

alternate retinol and hyaluronic acid at night, vitamin C oil in the morning. Plus some decent moisturiser on top of each. And drink plenty of water. I’ve been doing this routine for a few months (was just using moisturiser before) and my skin looks infinitely better.
