I have never dyed my hair. Now I have a little grey. What should I use? I am in your hands.

Since having 3 DSs in 4 years, I have grey hair (20 strands) at my right temple.

I have brown hair with reddish highlights.

Please can someone advise?

20 strands that must be unnoticeablre

i use loreal coleur experte and probabyl have about 20,000,000

ThomasTankEngine · 14/02/2008 20:43

Ah, but the 3 DSs do make that tricky.

And its only a little, but if I pull them all out, I'll have a big bald patch!

How did you choose the colour?

if you do want to do it yourself get a wash in/wash out one, that way any disaster will only be for 6 washes not 6 months! most of the ones you get in the shops are pretty much the same, make sure you do a patch test, get some of the towel thingys that get dye off your face and wash the bath out straight away - its a bugger to get off otherwise!

wash in wash out makes sense. But I like my hair colour.

Do they do one for just the grey areas?

I don't want to look like those folk who have lots of grey, and dye it red, and the grey bits colour a bit different, and it looks naff.

And i'm off to my parents for 1/2 term, if i'm honest, thats the issue.

its on the side of the box, just get one nearest your own colour, if your hair is dark and you use a non perm dye it wont go orange! my hair sounds the same colour as yours i just get a chestnut (or whatever daft name they call it, hair doesnt look dyed just shinier with less grey

zippitrippitoes · 14/02/2008 20:49

mine just looks like normal hair

ThomasTankEngine · 14/02/2008 20:49

So it doesn't completely change your hair colour then Nancy?

not at all the washin/out ones are not vey strong so would only be really noticable if yu went for jet black or something muh darker than your normal hair

Bluebutterfly · 14/02/2008 20:56

I agree - go to a hairdresser.

If you are determined to have a go yourself, I heard that to cover grey you should get a non permanent dye and get it one shade lighter than your normal hair - it will only colour the grey strands and not change your natural colour.

nancy75 · 14/02/2008 20:56

i would say definately get the towel things that get dye off the skin for your first go, it can get messy, and theres nothing nicer than a big brown line across your forehead! (they are about 99p from sainsburys or superdrug)

expatinscotland · 14/02/2008 20:57

only 20 strands?

go cheap!

jesu, mine's way grey.

Bluebutterfly · 14/02/2008 20:59

oh and avoid anything to reddish if red is a highlight in your hair rather than the underlying colour - so a light brown non permanent shade that washes out should cover your grey hairs and look normal.

aefondkiss · 14/02/2008 23:07

would henna be any good for grey coverage?

GrinningSoul · 14/02/2008 23:11

i've had a grey streak in my brown with reddish highlights hair since age 21 and have always used temporary dyes. they don't make your hair a solid helmet of colour, as long as you use a colour like your own. it just looks nice. and washes out anyway.

i had a professional job done a year ago and really regretted it - once you've gone down that alley there's no going back. i'm still growing out the bits they did and the condition became really rough.

fishie · 14/02/2008 23:18

brown hair with reddish highlights is pretty much what all home hairdye is (except blond). you can't go far wrong unless you get one with too much bleaching agent. look at small print on side of box, you'll get the picture.

fishie · 14/02/2008 23:19

no henna it is monstrous leaves clogging up your poor hair.

aefondkiss · 14/02/2008 23:28

that is interesting fishie, a friend of my dh maintains a glossy look with henna, I look greyer than she does, her hair looks very healthy and natural, and she is an organic farmer not interested in spending time at the hairdresser's.

gomez · 14/02/2008 23:29

I would advise Vidal Sasson or Toni & Guy. Don't it yourself.

nancy75 · 14/02/2008 23:30

the op has never dyed her hair before, henna is probably too much faffing and its permanent. from what i remember it also stinks!
