Skincare during Roaccutane

I am due to start Roaccutane in mid June (dermatologist delayed start due to a holiday) and am wondering what I will need in terms of skincare?

I am assuming I will need to keep it simple with just a gentle cleanser and then lots of moisturiser and SPF?

Does anyone have any recommendations for products or insight in to what I should be looking for/avoiding?

I am sure my dermatologist will cover this in my June appointment, but I would like to be prepared ahead of time.

Thanks

Thank you all so much, I am so pleased to hear your positive experiences and tips on how to mitigate the side effects. Am making a list of things to get/ask the dermatologist about.

I tend to be a sun dodger anyway and usually cover up arms and legs, but will certainly buy a few hats for the summer.

Thanks for the senna tip @lady725516, another thing I wouldn't have considered until it was too late!

I used Sainsburys cheap foaming cleanser, Aldi q10 moisturiser at night, lasinoh nipple cream for lips, dry eye drops from Sainsburys & my usual spf.

It’s worth noting that if you wear contact lenses it’s also worth getting some eye drops in case your eyes get dry. I also got shampoo and conditioners specifically for dry hair

I couldn't wear my lenses at all, if drops don't work you can get moisturising eye gels that stick to the eye more than drops do.

Lasinoh nipple cream may work for lips, I just didn’t know about it when I had roaccutane.

SWEAR BY THIS

I'm currently using this as it's the only balm that doesn't disappear in two minutes and you'll have shares in lip balm. I'm also putting it up my nose with a cotton swab overnight as the inside of my nose is so dry.

DD used coconut oil on her face at night because her skin was so dry whilst on Roaccutane. Ds used Dermol wash on his face & body, as he got patches of pretty bad psoriasis on Roaccutane. Now it's settled down a bit, he uses Aveeno soothing cream on his body. Both used Aquaphor on their lips. They also both use Cerave tub/moisturising lotion.
DD has actually been on it twice due to hormonal Acne. As unfortunately the spots came back after a couple of years. Not as badly though & they went away quickly on the second dose of Roaccutane.

Cetaphil face wash and cetaphil moisturiser. Plus cetaphil body moisturiser - my skin is naturally oily so I'd never really used a body moisturiser before. Needed one on roaccutane!

Plus definitely Aquaphor for lips and nose, plus eye drops and plenty of sun protection as your skin will be sensitive.

It's a brilliant drug, enjoy the results! Your skin will take a while to get dry though so you will have time to adjust your routine as needed. The best bit of the drug was watching all the little sebaceous filaments across my T zone pop out as my pores closed up Grin

I’m on it now, aged 36, and on the second month. My dermatologist has me on a lower dose for longer, to try and minimize the effects. I’ve been ok for side effects, certainly a little dryer. I sleep with aquaphor on every night and I use scene clearance hydra cleanser and also the “smoothing cream” which has been developed specifically for people
on accutane or similar. Lip balm is essential - I have a load of different ones,
it doesn’t matter which but the key is frequent application! Lanisoh nipple
cream comes in a large tube and is a good price. Having tried a few sunscreens, my favorite is the Cantabria labs one.

QuentininQuarantino · 13/04/2023 12:00

Ooh - eye drops! Get lots - you get dry eyes

@potatowhale I was thinking Cetaphil would probably be the sort of thing I would need. Thanks for the balm recommendation, I didn't think I would need to stick it up my nose 😳 did you get a lot of nosebleeds?

I didn't get any nosebleeds but my lips were soooo dry that Vaseline didn't cut it at all and so I used the lip stuff recommended. Good luck. It was life changing for me as I was so uncomfortable and not confident as always had poor skin.

Clicheinaqashqai · 13/04/2023 23:20

Thank you all, I don't wear contact lenses but will add some eye spray to the list. I have a feeling this is going to be a very sharp learning curve!

What did you use for washing your body in the shower? I usually use sanex so already quite gentle but not great for moisture.

I switched to simple bar soap for my underarms and had to use Dermol everywhere else. (Still need it for intimate areas Confused) but at least you can get it on prescription. Although one bottle lasts a while.

seymoursmyman · 13/04/2023 23:27

Should have said this was advised at the time by the dermatologist as I developed patches of Eczema which I'd never had before and very rarely had problems with since.

Custardpudding · 13/04/2023 23:28

Consultant told ds cerave and he’s used it during treatment and for three years after. The Am moisturiser has spf 50. He also uses the smoothing face wash.
