Curly boys hair question

I have very straight fine hair and have no idea about curls.

DS is 12, until around 6months ago he had straight but thick hair. Over the last 6 months his hair has gone very curly - ringlets even. He hates it and would prefer to have his old hair back. DH said the same thing happened to him and his brother about the same age. Puberty I guess.

So my question is, are there any products that will soften/loosen the curls and make it a bit more manageable for him? He’s not keen on styling products, but also happy to take advice on products he could use (and how to use them) that would not be too thick or sticky feeling.

I love his hair but if he is not loving it I’d like to give him some help with it.

Unfortunately - no. The only thing that will make the curls less curly, will be longer hair as the weight will pull the curl out; blowdrying or using a straightener; keeping it really really short so the curl isn't noticeable.

Longer probably won’t make a difference. When I met my husband his hair was mid back length blond ringlets!

Poor kid, he’s not super upset by it, but does miss his old hair. It coincided with us moving countries so he is convinced it’s the change of country rather than age

To be honest I had no idea that puberty could change hair texture

It's very fashionable at the moment for boys to have short back and side with curls on top (not too long though). Would that hair style work for him? I would take him to the hairdresser.
He's got to learn to love them

Boys are literally having their hair permed at the mo !

I have curly hair and different products / methods make different waves/ curls so it is possible but I would try getting some curl products just to put in after the shower as it will define the curls at least .

I'm sure there must be some men's curling products by now but if not try Rochelle's kids range as it's gentle for curly hair and not sticky

My ds(16) has very curly hair too which didn't really come in till puberty. The longer it is the more you see the curl tbh. He has it long on top and shorter round the sides, and uses Cantu curl cream after washing and conditioning to make it curl rather than just frizz, plus dampens it on non wash day to restore the curl.

He can use the same stuff that women use.

However to work out what he needs would be trial and error as it depends on his individual hair.

Cut it very short ?
Curly on top is fashionable.
Mid length curly and just wash and go?
Other than straightening / cutting short or lots of product on it I don’t think there is anything else he can do to it.
I would try to focus on the positives and try to persuade him to live with it because the alternative is going to be high maintenance for him.
I have very curly hair but I like it and it’s very low maintenance when you know how to deal with it.

Zooeyzebra · 11/04/2023 11:09

Thanks for all the tips!

He isn’t trying to straighten it, I was just wondering if there is anything to make them easier to deal with.

He does currently have the short sides curly mop on top hair cut. He is ok with it but has been asking how to get it a bit less curly. As my hair is super straight I have no idea.

We can have a go with curl defining creams. He normally just uses any shampoo and conditioner which is for fine hair, i don’t know if there are better options for conditioner.

But thanks for the tips, I will tell him some people are perming their hair to get what he has.

He isn’t worried about using men specific products, he will be happy with anything I suggest. He is still quite sweet and knows we are experimenting together with it

@Reugny oh god I know that lol.. I was thinking if he was a conscious teen then he might not want a bottle with a woman's face on etc !✅

mondaytosunday · 11/04/2023 14:36

It can, though I've usually seen it go from curly to much straighter in adolescence.
Why not cut it quite short?
