Is this rosacea on my 12yo DD's face?

Her skin is generally good but her cheeks are red with lots of little pimples. We've tried using sensitive skin products eg Simple but then she gets spots. At the moment she's using a sulphur and tea tree bar soap which has really helped the spots but she still has the redness and pimples.

Any suggestions of what to use? It seems that very sensitive products don't help with the spots but anything harsher brings out the red rash and pimples.

It’s not really common in kids it’s more likely to be normal acne.

If you look up keratosis Pilaris there is a face version of that. The name escapes me. I would say it looks more like that.

thegrain · 07/04/2023 07:24

I know she's worried about the spots but I think alternating the face wash with a gentle one might help. Simple isn't actually that good on my sensitive skin, try something like Cetaphil or Cerave - there's a whole bit in my big boots for "specialist skin care" it's in there.

CeraVe Hydrating wash. Doesn't look like rosacea as a pp said she's a bit young. Looks more like the products are too harsh for her skin.

My daughter has this. She is 15. It gets worse around the time of her period. I've been to the dermatologist who said it was hormonal and she had a very small dose of hydrocortisone when it got out of control. we use cetaphil stuff to settle redness and avaneo/ oat based washes for body and face. It has calmed down a lot, but I have also brought her probiotics for her gut health and I'm not sure whether this is also a big help or just a coincidence. My daughter, being a bit older wears a very light green based foundation at times which is excellent for coverage if she wants it. Hope this helps.

Thanks. We've tried the CeraVe face wash before but she said it stung her face. I might try Aveeno if they do a face wash. Would Azaelic acid be worth a try? I think I have some Ordinary stuff somewhere and it's cheap at least.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this OP?
my 11 year old daughter has the same!

Moopsi · 15/04/2023 22:25

No, we've tried various different things including suncream, non-irritating moisturisers etc but nothing has changed. It looks to me like lots of thread veins on her cheeks but I thought she would be too young for that?

Some vitamin deficiencies can cause symptoms like that.
Perhaps worth going to gp for blood test? Even if she had a good diet some people don't absorb certain vitamins too well, so can still be low.

Rainraingoaway21 · 15/04/2023 23:11

I'd take her to the GP for a diagnosis before trying all different washes and creams.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/04/2023 00:59

If CeraVe stings DO NOT get her azelaic acid! It's very stingy!

Go and see a doctor. It might be rosacea. Even if it's not they can probably recommend a really mild face wash. I like Glossier milky jelly wash when my skin is extra sensitive. Also the La Roche Posay Toleriane. But see a doc before dropping more money.

Exactly this. My daughter too. I feel like she’s too young for rosacea but I guess it’s possible. I was wondering if her skin barrier has somehow got damaged. We went skiing and the weather was harsh, it’s been since then that he’d skin is like this (although she’s always been prone to rosiness outside)
I might try the gp so perhaps we can keep in touch?

Thanks. That does look similar. I'm a bit reluctant to try my GP as I've found they're not very good with skin issues but would be interested to see what they say.
