Hair feels like straw - which tips/products do you recommend?

The title really says it all.

Most likely after dying my hair and/or using heat on it too much it has started to feel like straw. Especially at the front.

Any products that you recommend? I've had a search over the internet, but I'm none the wiser which I should be looking out for.

I only wash it once or twice a week anyway and have only been drying it the last few months or so. I used to just go to bed with wet hair, but I'd still straighten it the next morning.

I do have heat protect spray, but is the one I've got any good (frizz eaze). Although I must admit, until recently I did forget to use it. I have got better at this in the last couple of weeks or so.

Perhaps I need to go back to washing it once a week and just letting it dry naturally?

I want nice hair again so any tips and product recommendations will be greatly received.

Toni & Guy leave in conditioner is really good, the best leave in conditioner I have found, tried others, always go back to it.

I use a lot of products on my hair to make it super soft and shiny. Mostly Kérastase. Shampoo, L’Oréal wonder water, conditioner or mask. Serum, oil and their cream heat protectant. If see a massive difference if I change shampoo and conditioner even when I’ve used other professional brands. Not sure if it’s the hard water area I’ve moved to or the aftermath of covid but my hair did start to fall out a few months after covid and the texture started to change on top of the bleach/tone cycle of maintaining silver hair. No more hair loss and hair back to its soft shiny self.

Rosemary Oil!!!
I apply it at night all over my hair, massage my scalp etc and leave it in overnight.I put an old scarf over my pillow.
I'll wash my hair in the morning as normal and it leaves my hair so soft.(I have bleached hair.)
I apply the oil on my DD's hair too.

Use the Aveda damage remedy range but use the deep conditioner at each shampoo not normal conditioner. I use the smooth control heat protecter.

Satin bonnet at night helps too.

K18, pricey but an absolute miracle worker

Thanks @Stroopwaffle5000

I'm still going to buy it for my girls regardless because I can see their hair with my own eyes.

And I'm still wary that it's true. I've had a google now as well and for every article saying it's not good like this one (which has links to buy expensive products at the end)

www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/why-coconut-oil-is-bad-for-your-hair

there are a load saying it's great like these.

Are you sure this isn't the myth?

Why would it matter if it repels water and you wouldn't need to use 'any good products' if your hair was improved by the coconut oil.

I can understand why manufacturers of hair masks for twenty quid wouldn't want people to use it but people have been using it for generations. My MIL has used it her whole life, seventy years, and she has lustrous hair. As have my teenagers who she has trained up to use it.

Very sure 💇‍♀️
Use of it has gained popularity in the last decade, for its accessibility and cost. Manufacturers will jump onto any bandwagon to draw in the market back to their own brand.

From personal experience I would recommend Kerastase products.

Olaplex is more or less snake oil these days, unless it’s the full treatment then I wouldn’t advise. BS diluted products on the shelves for the general public.

I’ve dabbled in K18 and I don’t mind it.

Can anyone please post a link to the rosemary oil they are using? Alternatively, I’ve had a look on line and a lot seem to be the pure essential oil, and I’m not entirely sure how to use that. Any steer there please?

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 07/04/2023 14:33

I use the essential oil but in jojoba oil or the ordinary Hemi squalene and apply it the night before washing under my bonnet.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 07/04/2023 14:34

Mainly for cost benefits. I’m not paying £15 for it.

YouSetTheTone · 07/04/2023 19:17

@Doub I don’t know what everyone else is using but I have a Nature’s Spells Rosemary oil for hair and body. Sorry I’m on my phone so can’t link to it. This rosemary oil is in a carrier oil so you can apply it to the scalp. I just put a little bit in the palm of one hand and use finger tips from other hand to apply on my scalp. When I want to get rid of the last bits on my hand I smooth that over the ends of my hair. I don’t like feeling too oily so I don’t put much on my scalp or hair at all. I do this the night before washing.

However, prior to using this I bought rosemary essential oil and simply added 5 drops to the shampoo on my second wash (I shampoo twice), mix the oil in then shampoo. Leave it on a couple of mins then rinse out. I think I slightly prefer this method so will now alternate between this and applying the oil like above.

I’ve had a lot of trouble with my hair (telogen effluvium triggered by covid/ low iron/ fluctuating hormones) and this was one of the things that made a big difference. The texture of my hair changed a lot too and it went all dry. It’s much shinier again now as well as not falling out.

VanillaImpulse · 07/04/2023 20:00

The new Elvive bonding range is quite good if you want a cheaper alternative to Olaplex. My hair is like straw usually but with that it's more like my daughters - nice and smooth. Don't order from Boots though because I did and they missed out the conditioner but won't refund. It's half price at most places at the moment

Second this. Amazing.

fiftysth · 07/04/2023 22:14

I recently started using K18. I deep condition every week or so too using a shower cap. Minimal heat, and colour. Also ditch a regular towel. They are soooo drying. Use either a T-shirt or a towel like this.

Summerslimtime · 07/04/2023 22:36

I used Moroccan Oil on my bleached hair for years, it was the only thing that made it soft and manageable. However, I could tell it wasn't actually making my hair better/healthier, just made it easier.

CalmDownBoris72 · 07/04/2023 22:40

I was going to say NOT olaplex, totally shite for my hair, made it a dry frizzy mess.

BMrs · 07/04/2023 22:47

K18 mask is fab
