Please help with man's job interview outfit

Thank you 🙏

Man, mid-forties, worked from home since Covid but has an interview in a techy role in a media business with big London offices. The role would be mostly from home and one or two days in the office. Not in the best shape (tummy!), normal style is tatty old hoodies and baggy jeans. What should he wear? Suit, or good jeans and fine knit, or chinos and shirt? Advice and links to the right thing very welcome!

Working in tech id say unless he's going for an exec role - nice jeans and a shirt or jumper are perfect. Or chinos and a shirt or jumper. Smart cas is usual in tech and most offices these days. Sure he will do great! Best of luck.

Chinos and a nice shirt or jumper would be good. He could probably get away with smart jeans but better to be slightly over dressed just in case.

Thanks both. Feels hard to strike the balance right! I said I'd ask here to get a wider view.

Jeans for an interview? I’m getting old 🤣

Good luck!

I'd always go suit for an interview. Minimum of shirt and tie with suit trousers if you don't want to buy the jacket.
Marks and Spencer's or Next.
I don't think you can go wrong with a suit - it is an interview and you're showing you made an effort.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 04/04/2023 22:45

Smart trousers and a shirt or smart jumper is fine, tie and jacket isn't necessary unless he's likely to be involved in client facing/sales type functions if he gets the role.

Agapornis · 04/04/2023 22:49

For media/tech I'd go for chinos and a nice shirt (any colour that isn't white). Don't wear jeans - it might be okay but slightly dressed up for interview is always better. Black jeans would be less obvious, at a stretch.

ceepeeree · 04/04/2023 22:49

I wouldn't go with a suit for a role like that. What about a nice blazer, fine knit hoodie, t-shirt and chinos-style pants.

I would be surprised to see a tech interviewee in a suit

JonesDrones · 04/04/2023 22:56

He has decent suits, it's just whether that's too formal these days. Such a range of opinions, we still don't know what to do 🙈

Is the interview face to face or online?

If online- jeans are fine, with a shirt and jacket

Face to face- suit, or smart trousers, shirt and jacket.

M&S have the big/tall range (I think its called) which can be ordered online and the shirts he would need for a tummy are loose or regular fit depending on the brand. DH has a similar physique, and almost every mans shirt is now slim line, fitted, or slim cut etc- which I assume only refers to someone with a 6 pack!

This would be my suggestion. No ties!

Chinos shirt and blazer?

this is dh smart look wheeled out once a year or so.

Tan / brown shoes, navy chinos, checked shirt, and an blue unlined fine wool jacket that has been a massive success for someone who spends most time in sports kit or athleisure. Jumper sounds good but id be too hot or worried about being to hot.
