Foundation help

I know this has been done, I’ve read old threads but need advice that’s specific to me.

I’ve been using no 7 hydraluminos foundation for a while but it’s too orange on me.

Im 35 and my skin has changed and I’m having real trouble covering my imperfections.

I have a lot of redness across my cheeks and nose so I need medium/high coverage. I get oily around my nose but overall my skin is quite dry and flaky especially on the nose, chin and near the eyebrows. Cheeks are not dry but I now seem to have big pores that foundation sits in even with primer.

Im also very pale.

when I wear foundation it always seems to look orange, my redness comes through, it sits in pores and clings to dry patches.

Can anybody recommend anything please?

I've never got on with foundation but I've recently been using a CC cream (Max Factor in my case) which I'm really liking.

thegrain · 02/04/2023 15:43

What shade are you using?

MaltedCow · 02/04/2023 15:46

A good base before the foundation is important, what are you using as primer? Smashbox do decent primers I'm sure they do an anti redness one.

My skin leans towards dry, I use Vitalumiere (but it's been discontinued) and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk but I hate the smell and it isn't a heavy coverage.

I think skincare and prep will help a lot though, if you have a primer to counteract the redness then you probably wouldn't need such a heavy foundation and could even go down the tinted moisturiser route (Nars one is great and decent shade variety).

Try Estée Lauder double wear. It should definitely help combat the redness and it lasts all day. If you go to an Estée Lauder counter in Boots or a department store they'll be able to suggest the best colour and give you a free sample which should last a few days to try. Definitely use a primer under any foundation. I like the No 7 ones.

Delilah do nice foundation, Alibi offers great foundation with good coverage and cruelty free which is very important to me. Small British company

Coastalvenues · 02/04/2023 16:16

Alibi is the name of the foundation, sorry didn't make that clear

Coastalvenues · 02/04/2023 16:17

They do a nice primer too

thegrain · 02/04/2023 16:21

I'd try a colour corrector before going for the heavy duty doublewear

Freshstarts22 · 02/04/2023 19:51

@CharlotteStreetW1 ive got nars tinted moisturiser which I really like but it’s no good for covering my redness.

@thegrain I use the lightest one, calico or something, but it’s definitely orange on me.

@MaltedCow I do use a smash box primer. Was going to try the green one but tbh the silver one isn’t doing me any favours with helping foundation sit right so I didn’t want to waste more money. But maybe you’re right and a colour correcting primer would mean I could get away with my Nars tinted on top.

@Anjelika I tried a sample of double wear. The colour wasn’t right but I liked the coverage. It was definitely a bit cakey on me though from what I remember.

Unfortunately I don’t know what to use skincare wise either to get on top of the dryness and pores. I’ve tried various things but I’ve also read that I should use minimal products due to my redness which I reckon is probably rosacea. I might go to the GP.

A lot of skincare brands have an online regime planner - you could put in your concerns/skincare aims and they can point you in the direction of what regime you follow (using their products, of course)
The ordinary, inkey list, and Paula's choice are all reasonably priced.
Elemis products are gorgeous, in my opinion anyhow.
The way your foundation sits massively depends on how you prep and prime your skin

I was using ordinary but after reading into rosacea I stopped. From what I can gather it needs to be really simplistic skincare with minimal products. All I’m using currently is a moisturiser. Tbh I haven’t noticed any difference since I stopped using my other products so they obviously weren’t doing anything.

For a cheaper recommendation, I think L'Oreal True Match blendable foundation might suit?

I find it a little too much coverage but otherwise I find it to be excellent - easily as good as more expensive options and a huge range of shades.

I also second the advice to use a green based primer.

No7 Airbrush Away Colour Balancing Primer is very good.

I also rate using something like the green from L'Oréal Infallible Total Cover Concealer Palette and a damp foundation sponge to just apply the tiniest bit of green where needed (under foundation).

I have redness due to rosacea and have just started using Dr Jart Cicapair (green tinted cream) under IT cosmetics CC your skin but better and my skin is looking lovely! I was previously using hydra luminous but found that my skin was looking a but dull so I watched a few YouTube videos by Rose Gallagher who is a MUA with rosacea she is fab.

I actually looked at this the other day. I found the colours to be really good but I put a bit on in the shop and it looked terrible in my pores. I had no primer though.

Im definitely going to get that primer. I’ve just seen that no7 age perfect foundation has more shades than hydraluminous so I might try one of those as there’s a buy one get one half price on so if I’m getting the primer I might as well try.

I was looking at that yesterday but read it isn’t great under make up. Do you find it good for covering redness?

Yes really good but you need to dab it on gently not rub it right in… the CC cream is also good on its own
