Where to start updating my make up?

Thanks to having a teenager, a few “look how funny make up was in the 90s” videos appear in my social media, and I’ve realised that’s what I do, and I’ve not changed make up technique or colours for decades. I quite fancy up grading a bit, I’m happy to spend money to help, but don’t know where to start. Do I just go along to a Mac or Charlotte Tilbury counter and let them sell to me? Are there smaller stores that are better and give better advice? Who is in their 40s on Instagram/ social media and worth following for this?

I've noticed quite a change in how the youngsters apply eyeshadow now than how I learned in the 80s. They do an awful lot of blending of different tones and shades now, very artistic, while I keep it simple (and probably boring and dated)

Hannahmartinmakeup on Instagram is good (imo)
You tube - Wayne Goss covers classic techniques.
Shelby_wilson on instagram is closer to my own style - simple

I follow Courtney Hamilton (the make up artist next door) on Instagram and her make up is lovely, achievable and not overly complicated.

To be honest where I'd go would depend on skin type/ product etc. I don't rate Charlotte Tilbury everything is a bit overrated, MAC foundation isn't great for my skin. If I had to pick just one counter I'd probably go Chanel or even Nars. Nars tinted moisturiser is lovely, their concealer is great, Chanel foundation is amazing and the cream bronzer.

For eyeshadow palettes, CT does do little eyeshadow kits for various eye colours but I really like Juvias Place.

Mascara I still default back to Maybelline to be honest.

I did this recently, binned 90% of my makeup and kept the basics that I liked and used. I've been picking maybe 1 or 2 new things to buy a month, I started with foundation and bought Estee Lauder double wear which I love. And I also bought a gorgeous Dior quad eyeshadow.

The next month I bought an Estee Lauder blush and bronzer and discovered that Lancome lipsticks are amazing.

I would pick a specific item you want to replace, do a lot of googling for recommendation and the head to a shop that has a few different counters to try some things out.

I know it doesn't have an indication on the quality of the products, but I have been put off by Charlotte Tilbury and MAC purely because of the way I've been treated when I approached the counters (ignored, not been offered to try the products, felt like a nuisance when I did ask)

The best counters I've found have been Dior and Estee Lauder (who seem to give a lot of freebies everytime I go!)
