Ladybeard etiquette

I'm waiting for a new hair removal tool to be delivered tomorrow. I'm excited to try it so don't want to tweeze what is now some rather impressive lady beard growth (I've been off work all week). It's now very noticeable, even from a passing distance (it's definitely way past 5pm). But I need to go to the shop.

The one good thing about COVID was hiding behind a mask. I saved so much time from tweezing etc.

It comes high enough up my face that a neck scarf won't hide it without being culturally insensitive.

I'm not brave enough to style out this much beard (even though I know I should).

There isn't really an etiquette- just ride it out. Wear a face covering if you want and people will think you have covid/are vulnerable

winkygirl · 02/04/2023 13:04

Why not wear a mask? A few people still do. You could cough a bit to make it look like you are preventing your germs spreading....

Papergirl1968 · 02/04/2023 13:04

Wear a mask anyway. Some people still do in public places.

Ladysaurus · 02/04/2023 13:17

Folks round here (not including myself) were barely wearing masks in the height of the pandemic. I might get lynched for following tory rules in such a staunch labour heartland. I kid you not, got squared up to for masking up going to GP 3 weeks ago.

Stupid media imposed beauty standards making me self conscious. It's so frustrating. I know there's no shame in being hirsute and I'd never judge anyone else. But I just can't release my great hairy ball sack of a chin where the neighbours might see.

What about a buff? Its tighter than a scarf so it will stay up if you pull it over your mouth and if anyone asks just tell them you have toothache or something?

Although it will only become more culturally acceptable if more of us go out and about like it (and yet I still can't bring myself to so I'm not judging you for not OP)

Motorcycle helmet then but you'll have to take it off in the shop

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 02/04/2023 13:25

Your choices are

  • nothing and style it out
  • mask
  • scarf/buff which kind of may as well just be a mask as it will be so high up.

I still wear a mask in some shops and other indoor places if it's busy or I have a cold that I don't want others to catch or a great big spot on my nose like I had last week (thanks hormones!!!).

A buff may be the next investment if this gizmo doesn't work when it comes tomorrow. Alas I don't currently own one.

I want to be that solid sister who strides it out. No shame. Just heard. But I'm so ugly before the beard gets considered, I just can't go out with this fuzzy cherry on top of my ugly cake face.

We joke about motorcycle helmet but I once reasoned with a lady in the coop to keep mine on for exactly this reason. 🤣. 'please I just need a loaf of bread but I've not tweezed'. 'ah, I understand, be quick'. Alas I no longer have a motor bike and thus no helmet. Yes, I'm more willing to admit that it needs to be tweezed than let people actually see it untweezed! I'm a complicated being. 🤣

Really? 🤨 disagreeing with something does not therefore make it the political opposite of one's own opinion.

mintbiscuit · 02/04/2023 13:40

OP what about the distraction technique? Can you wear something so hideous people won’t be looking at your face? 😂

From the little sense I could make of his garbled rhetoric as I backed into the pharmacy shelves, I'm not gonna risk it. Thanks.

I think I'll see if some lunch gives my jib some more oomph to wear my hair with pride... Or at least less shame.

These are very popular with a lot of people in Paris at the moment...

Oh no - it's not going to help, I've just noticed it's got a beard!

If I could style it like that mask. Now that would be cool.

Instead I look like fat zz top got run-over. (I love zz top though, I just wish they'd keep their beards to themselves)

Just though I'd update for if anyone finds this thread. (Not on if I went for bread, no one cares about that(I didn't, I'll go today)).

My de-bearding tool came! And it works! It's not permanent but it's a new solution I hadn't tried before. It called an epilator spring. You can buy cheap ones of eBay for a couple of quid. It looks like a deranged set of love eggs. It's reusable. No batteries. And with a little practice I've done an ok job at de fuzzing. I expect with more practice it will get easier and quicker as can be a little fiddly to begin with. I also expect it won't be as difficult with quite so long a beard.

Thanks everyone about with putting up with my hairy whining. I am so glad I waited so I could play with it as soon as it came.
