Longevity of plated jewellery

I really love the look of rose gold jewellery, and have always been a bit of a snob about only having solid gold (just because I want it to last). I'd like to treat myself to something new with a bit of money I was given, and I'm tempted by some vermeil and filled pieces I've seen online. I know that rings in particular will eventually lose their plating, especially if worn a lot. Do you just bin the jewellery afterwards?? I feel a bit guilty buying something I know has a finite lifespan! I do know the difference between plated/vermeil/filled, but even the latter two wear away eventually.

I won't buy it anymore for that very reason..my dh bought me 2 gemstone rings in a jewellers in Barcelona one year.

He wanted them in solid gold but they were only available in vermeil so he went ahead. They're beautiful cocktail stacking rings so not worn daily nor did I wear them doing housework etc but one of them had lost its gold colour far more dramatically than the other & I don't enjoy wearing them as much now.

I love the 2 stones & the style & have come considered asking a jeweller to replicate them exactly but in gold.

I stick to solid gold for same reason - I’ve found plating just doesn’t last
my exception to this rule is rhodium plating over gold as I’ve had a local jeweller do this to enhance settings of a piece and it’s more long lasting and can just be redone
The ring was set in yellow gold and I just had the claws plated
The bangle had an antique finish in a gunmetal colour and it didn’t show off the difference between the white and champagne diamonds very well
cost of plating was £15 for ring and £35 for bangle

Can gold plating be redone or not without taking out the whole setting? I have a ring I love, but it is sad that it won’t last.

Hmm, this is definitely validating my concerns! I think I'll stick to plain silver or solid gold then. Your rings look lovely by the way @JaceLancs

I have the same concerns about plating etc but my solution (as i rarely want to splash out on solid gold) has been to purchase from monica vinader as you can get free repairs for 5 years, so anything faded will be fixed or replaced.

I'd love to know of other brands that also do this.

Thank you @RiceOnABike
I am a bit of a magpie!

I learned the hard way that even with higher end vermeil jewellery the plate rubs off and it's really expensive to get it replated. I would still buy it but only if it was v cheap (T K Maxx or Accessorize). Otherwise I'd rather stick to silver.
