50cm deep wardrobe - too small?

So this is not strictly a style question but I thought I’d get the most helpful answers here!

Has anybody got a wardrobe that is just 50cm deep (60cm is standard)? How do you find it? Can you hang your clothes normally in it or is it too small?

In our new house I would like to have a built in wardrobe on one wall but there is only room for one with an internal depth of 50cm.

We currently have a standard 60cm wardrobe. I’ve checked that and measured that we would be able to hang all of our clothes in 49cm, but there would be no space between the clothes and the door. Any thoughts?

How about hanging clothes forward facing instead? My DD has a 38cm depth wardrobe and she has half draws up to waist height in two sections and then one slimline full section for dresses.

We have a built in wardrobe that is only 50cm (was already there when we moved in) and it’s pretty annoying. It’s usable but I have to be careful what type of hangers I use and the sliding doors are constantly rubbing on the clothes. I have to put shoulder protectors on anything even slightly bulky to protect them, plus there is no space for air circulation at the back.

Who even produces these wardrobes that aren't fit for purpose?? Ours barely fits coat hangers and the doors rub (sliding doors) and leave marks on the clothes. So infuriating. Not unlike toasters that don't fit bread slices.

I was looking at sliding wardrobes for my tiny bedroom and the 50 cm depth was front facing hanging which wasn't what I wanted.

Thanks for the replies.

I’m not keen on forward hanging wardrobes as you can’t see what’s in there very well.

The one I would buy has normal doors, so no issue with the sliding door rubbing the clothes. But I’m a bit concerned as to whether the clothes would get too squashed and (more importantly) whether there is enough airspace for the clothes not to get musty.

@Mercurial123 I’m looking at Tylko where you can order made to measure online. The Tone range has a 53cm wardrobe which is normal hanging but with normal doors. I’m not sure if that would be an option or if you need sliding doors due to space?

My wardrobe is 50cm depth (IKEA children’s) and I’ve never had any problems.

I use these types of hangers as you can cram get more in width ways too.

Full disclose, it’s only my clothes in there and I’m a size 10. I’m not sure DH’s things would fit so easily.

I also don’t have any dresses in there, it’s the height that would be more an issue then I think.

50cm is ok for trousers, tops, dresses, anything fairly small but you won't get mens chunky shirts, light coats and stuff like that in it easily and definitely not men's suits or jackets. Can you arrange the wardrobe so only smaller things go in there and bigger things in the deeper 60cm one

@chloechloe thanks I'll take a look but I really need sliding wardrobes. Contempo have the nicest looking sliding wardrobes I've seen so far.

Thanks @TheOGCCL and @User639762456 , that’s helpful.

The wardrobe would be for my and DH’s stuff in the dressing room. So no bulky coats etc. I’m sure my stuff would fit in it and DH’s shirts (have measured our current stuff). However DH’s suits will probably get a bit squashed although he doesn’t really wear them Post COVID.

I’ve attached a plan of our dressing room. You basically walk through it into the bedroom. The two red dots are where the wardrobes would be. Ideally I would have just one long wardrobe (would be 460cm wide and 265 cm high) with everything in it, with a mixture of drawers, shelves and hanging space. However on that long wall the maximum depth would be 50cm.

Alternatively we could make this long wardrobe just 40cm deep with shelves and drawers in it. But then we would need a second wardrobe (60cm deep) to hang things.

I think the room would look better without the second wardrobe. Also 2 wardrobes would be £££ and provide more storage than we need.
