One droopy eyelid/ptosis

I’ve had my eye checked by an opthalmologist and all is healthy but it’s has been described as age related drooping :-(
my left eyelid has been steadily getting more droopy than the right one for the last 10 or so years but I’m really noticing it now. I think it makes me look a bit tired/drunk!
Is the only way to improve this by surgery?
anyone had similar?

Yes!! I gave the exact same thing. However, I have been diagnosed with idiopathic Horners syndrome.

Once I've had additional scans to rule out anything nasty, I'm going to pay the 4k for private surgery. The NHS don't want to know.

Runaround50 · 31/03/2023 17:49

Your ptosis is exactly like mine in my left eye.

Gymnopedie · 31/03/2023 22:48

Me three. Also left eye, is there something that makes the left one more likely or is it just coincidence that there's three of us?

CreeperBoom · 31/03/2023 23:07

Mine is my right eye. I've not found anything to help it, though its less bad if I get a good night's sleep (rare).

The eye doctor (NHS) said it will get worse with age, and they will operate when it affects my vision.

She blamed my contact lenses, and suggested stopping wearing them.

captncrunch · 31/03/2023 23:11

My DD has this. She's only 7 and she's had it since birth. I have been told that there is an effective surgery available to improve the look of it when she's older (privately as it is a cosmetic issue only in her case so NHS would not cover) she's only recently started to become aware of it 😔

Daisymay2 · 31/03/2023 23:16

DH has just had surgery on his right eye as it was affecting his vision. He was warned the other eye would probably start to drop, something to do with the nerve supply. He thinks it has already at 5 weeks.
@CreeperBoom He has worn contact lenses for years (40 plus) ophthalmolgist didn't think there was any link.

Runaround50 · 01/04/2023 09:17

I am also a contact lens wearer ( 30 years ) but as I said, mine is Horners. The nhs said they won't operate until my vision is affected.

It looks ALOT worse when I'm tired, which is pretty much always these days !

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 01/04/2023 13:11

I get this when I’m tired. Didn’t realise it’s a condition! Eye massage helps mine / heated eye masks / teabags or cucumber on it.

jerryg · 01/04/2023 18:45

I have this and wear one of those little sticky strips on the non-droopy one to even them up

Runaround50 · 01/04/2023 20:27

@jerryg do you have a ptosis? Where do you get the sticky strips from please ?

SweetSakura · 01/04/2023 20:31

Just make sure they rule out conditions like myasthenia gravis first.

I have seronegative Myasthenia Gravis so it doesn't even show up in blood tests.

(It was diagnosed by a mix of symptoms and a single.fibre.EMG)

user1471453601 · 01/04/2023 20:48

I have a form of Horners syndrome. I don't have the droopy eye thing, but I don't react to the temperature on one side of my body. When I tell people, they kind of think ok, no big deal. Then they see me in extreme heat. One side of my head and body is wet with sweat, the other side is bone dry. When I exercise, one half of my face is pink, the other side isnt.

I was told it could be caused by either a pancost (spelling?) tumour Or the removal of such a tumour. In my case, it's the latter.

If I were you, I'd get it checked out.

boboshmobo · 01/04/2023 21:17

@captncrunch that isn't true . My son has ptosis and we were offered surgery on the nhs . I didn't want it .

His doesn't obscure his vision either ( one of the normal considerations) .. go back to your gp and ask for a referral .

No, according to ophthalmologist I have more skin on one eyelid than the other which causes it to look droopy. It gets worse if I'm tired though. It's these...

Runaround50 · 01/04/2023 21:30

OP, have you had all the scans etc ?
They are a must with a droopy eye lid.

I also have the temperature thing. Half my face gets warm and the other doesn't.

It's a weird thing, but you must get it checked thoroughly.

I'm currently waiting for another scan and a neurologist appointment to be absolutely certain I haven't any thing bad.
