The White Company - prices!

Does anyone else think they are now OTT?

I've bought from them for years and always thought they were pricey but quality was great and stuff lasted.

But now they seem to have hiked their prices to an extent where I think 'You must be joking!'

I was looking at the summer nightdresses (I have 2 nightdresses already from them bought with the 'loyalty' 20% off which doesn't exist now except high days and holidays, if you're lucky.)

Cotton nightdresses are £50-£60, so even with a 15% discount, that's over £40.

Yes, they are very pretty and the styles/ colours are unique to them. BUT J Lewis sell cotton nighties ( not such a nice colour IMO but all cotton) for around £25.

I can afford their prices but I just feel now they are over-priced for what they are.

I don't know. I'm prepared to pay for quality clothing if it's not made in China (especially). I'd prefer to pay more and it be made in the UK. I don't buy cheap fashion so most of my stuff I've had for years.

AJewelintheCrown · 27/03/2023 16:31

I doubt any of it is made in the UK.

I've just had a look on their page and can't see any nighties. Have you got a link?

Hoppinggreen · 27/03/2023 16:31

I’m still happy to pay those prices for simple well made classics.
I have some lovely cashmere, linen and cotton things from TWC and it’s pretty timeless

Arapawa · 27/03/2023 16:32

sorry, found them now. V strange, had to exit and then go in to account again.

KnittedCardi · 27/03/2023 16:41

I get MIL to send me vouchers for Xmas and birthdays, try to buy in the sale, and always use the 15% off. If you don't personally have a code, they are always knocking about on the internet somewhere. I've bought some lovely (expensive) items over the years, but never full price.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 27/03/2023 16:48

Those prices don't sound disproportionate to what they have always charged (allowing for inflation) tbh. They have always been expensive for what they are and I don't especially rate the quality of the clothes, although the towels are worth it - expensive but they keep looking good for years, even with frequent use.

AJewelintheCrown · 27/03/2023 17:27

I agree with your comments.
I have had some lovely knitwear and it's washed well.
I suppose in my head, I can't quite get to grips with paying £50 for a tiny piece of cotton, made into a simple chemise type nighty!
I do buy some in their sales but sadly the ones I like sell out fast!

They are cheaper pound for pound than 15 years ago
But sadly the quality is now crap and so not worth buying

BHRK · 28/03/2023 22:21

I also think the quality has gone down while the prices have gone crazy. Also a regular shopper for years

Emotionalstorm · 29/03/2023 10:20

I don't think it's expensive. I think it's one of the more affordable brands below mid range brands. Their candles are much cheaper than the Diptyque and Jo Malone ones which I would consider mid range.

You inhabit a different world to me :)

What do you consider mid-range, if THW is 'cheap'? They rarely have knitwear for under £100.

I think Diptyque and Jo Malone are very pricey and not at all value for money. There is no way I'd spend £50 on a candle. I could, but I don't.

For candles, I prefer St Eval as they are natural and supporting UK business (but that's another story...)

The quality doesn't match the price, love their bedding but I have to sew on spare buttons and their towels don't last.

I consider Tibi, the Curated, Sezane, Reformation, Anthropology etc mid range. M&S, White Company etc more generic high street. I do still buy loads off the White Company though (especially kids clothes and tea towels).

I disagree regarding the quality of some of the premium brand candles. The throw on Diptyque candles is much better and they have some scents at Byredo, Mad et Len etc that I can't find anywhere else. The Mad et Len ones are also hand poured in a metal container that is handmade.

I don't really care about supporting UK business. I only care about the product. I'll support them if they have a better product e.g. some Dyson products.

Emotionalstorm · 29/03/2023 16:05

I'll check out St Evals though. What is their throw strength like?

CherryHouse · 29/03/2023 19:36

Have you been to one of the outlet stores? It’s my go to now for bedding and towels as white is timeless
