In the process of recovery from a nasty flu-type virus and caught sight of myself in the mirror for the first time in a little while Shock I seem to have aged a decade and it's knocked my shred of self-esteem.
There's things I can fix easily on my own- mainly I need to colour my greys and pluck my eyebrows- but I think I might take this opportunity to have a bit of an overhaul.

Recommendations for the following please?!

Currently I use a micellar water to cleanse and the basic superdrug naturally radiant moisturiser. Occasional glycolic acid (maybe twice weekly?)- I'm mid thirties, skin is on the dry side of normal and very blotchy just now- I'm hoping that's from being ill and it goes away but if not..

Not a daily make-up wearer, maybe I need to be. I usually stick to No7 naturally radiant/hydraluminous. Think I need a change, I like the coverage but it seems to sit heavy on my face (maybe a primer?).

Hairs like straw with greasy roots. Problem as old as time!

Clothes and body stuff I can leave for another day. Anyone else up for making a few little changes? I can't stick to a full on Princessing thread, but small changes feel relatively achievable. Sorry for the essay!

In exactly the same position!
Following for tips.
I have always been very low maintenance- Nivea moisturiser, simple face wash, very little make up, but I’m not sure I can get away with it anymore!

I think this is the worst time of year coming out of winter though, hoping a bit of sunshine in the next few weeks will help!

I feel exactly the same after having Covid. I recently bought some cerave oil cleanser, Q&A superfood oil and hylauronic acid and some night moisturiser and exfoliator. My skin does look better I think. I've started wearing make up during the week (got out of the habit as I work from home), and I had my hair cut and got some highlights. Im also taking a probiotic and vitamin D. I feel better than I did, but my under eye area is still very dark and I haven't got a lot of energy.

You could try changing your skin care.
I really rate skin and me or dermatica for proper proven to work ingredients
Also buy a facial spf

If that's too much too soon ( still get the SPF - I like cetaphil as you can get it in Tesco) then a cc cream or new tinted moisturiser might make you feel nice. IT cosmetics is v good coverage if that's what you prefer.

I think if you have blotchy skin then miceller water won't help no matter how it's marketed. You need a balm cleanser like Clinique take the day off.

Overall though I'd start with skin and me and then go from there.

@orangesky1 you sound just like me! I've never been one for daily make up, I tend to end up breaking out, but maybe a cc cream like @Artemisty suggested might be a good middle ground. I wonder if there's a Cc cream & spf in one?
I meant to use the micellar water as part of a double cleanse but I admit I got lazy. Proper cleanser added to list and reading up on skin and me. Is The Ordinary out now? That was all the rage last time I looked into this stuff.
I've seen cerave crop up a few times on skincare threads @VioletCharlotte I'm glad it's working for you. I tried to research probiotics but it was a bit of a minefield, what do you take and do you think it's worth it? I've just found my vit D, I probably need it..

The it cosmetics cc cream I recommended is an spf too, it's factor 50 😃

VioletCharlotte · 27/03/2023 22:08

@iseetrees I got very confused with probiotics too! In the end I bought Holland & Barrett 'immune'. The reviews were good and they're on but one get one 1/2 price. I've had less stomach aches since I've been taking them.

I’m also mid 30s & did the save thing during lockdown.

Starting a skincare regime made me feel better in myself. I mainly do it at night (I have more time). I double cleanse, then use an eye cream, serum & overnight oil. I use Sarah Chapman.

Another change I made was a daily SPF50. It’s a bit of trial & error because I wear make up daily so it had to dry well & quickly. I ended up loving one from Paula’s Choice.

Makeup wise, I love the glowy look I’m currently getting by mixing a highlighter & a very light foundation (both Charlotte Tilbury).

The thing that really made me feel over COVID was Floradix.

Beauty wise, I think a light shimmer on the eyelid and a slick of mascara is good. Teinte Idole foundation from Lancome is gorgeous if you want to splash out.

I swear by the ordinary and tinted moisturiser (Nars) and I think my skin is looking a lot more fresh and dewy (mid 30’s)

the ordinary I use the squalane cleanser and moisturiser is natural factors. I then use Niacinamide, skin has improved no end

Thanks everyone, some really good suggestions here and I've got some good ideas to take forward!
@Artemisty the IT cosmetics cc cream seems to have some rave reviews, I'm torn between that one and the Erborian one. I'm incredibly pale so usually wary of buying make up online, but the big department stores closing makes it difficult to find brands in store too. Annoying!
@VioletCharlotte that's good to know. I'm under gastroenterology at the moment so might hold off and see if they can recommend anything at my next appointment. Anything that could improve my dodgy digestion would be quite welcome!
The skin & me idea looks so great. I'm not sure if I "need" the prescription strength stuff (yet) so might save the cash and attempt to go it alone using a similar budget. I think if I could get a solid cleanse/moisturise and twice weekly treatment routine going I might see some difference. My skin isn't bad with spots/dryness/wrinkles, it's just a bit dull!
