Stylish comfortable sandals for city break in heat?

Justkoko · 26/03/2023 14:12

Off to Rome in the summer and I'd like to pack as light as possible. I'm aware I'm going to find the heat a challenge so am thinking of taking several simple linen dresses.

I have tevas, Salt waters, and random various sandals. The saltwater are thin soled and while I find them comfy, I'm not sure about 3 or 4 days always on the go? The tevas are comfy but not terribly smart.

Is there a best of both worlds?

I have 2 different pairs of these that I bought last year and they are soooo comfy!

Just back from 4 days in Rome and we covered 36 miles on foot! Normally Birkenstocks are my go to sandals and I wear on holiday / everyday in good weather with no problems. However, the cobbles, uneven road and pavements in Rome mean my feet were pushed in directions not normally an issue and the Birkenstocks worn on day one caused a blister in a place on my foot I did not know it was possible to get one! Day 2 - 4, trainers with socks and much better, as handled the lumps and bumps of Rome better. Take sandals and Birkies and take a view as to what your feet can handle, but better to have the choice to change into.

TollgateDebs · 27/03/2023 16:36

Sorry, meant to say trainers, not just sandals and Birkies

Justkoko · 27/03/2023 17:42

@TollgateDebs 36 miles😲 good advice from you there thank you. I hate having hot feet hence avoiding trainers in the heat but I think I'll have to take some. I've got supergas so maybe I'll invest in some good trainer socks to feel comfortable.
I think I'll have to take them as well as some sandals/birks.

Oo just looked at the Soft sole saltwater sandals, they do look squishy! Anyone tried them?

The skechers ones, are they the bobs sandals? Are they squishy underfoot?

I went to Rome last June, and took my trusty Tevas, with some well-worn birkenstocks for back-up. And, there's definitely something about all those cobbles, as the birkenstocks gave me blisters, which the Tevas then rubbed. If I'd been staying any longer I'd have bought some trainers, but I just hobbled home instead. Would definitely take trainers (and socks) again!

I did 3 long days at Disneyland in Skechers Airwalks. Comfiest (but ugliest) things ever. I didn't care in the end.

Take a good cooling foot spray.

I've just had a pair of saltwater boardwalks delivered with exactly this in mind - I love my saltwater slides but thought they'd be a bit hard for walking about. Love them so far (but haven't put them to a serious test yet!).

I have sketchers sandals and if you're looking for comfort these are similar comfort to their trainers.

I do too, I can walk miles in them but they are nice enough to wear with dresses

HanSB · 29/03/2023 20:30

Rome is not like a normal city break, the streets are really hard on your feet as they are mostly cobbled, with lots of uneven broken bits and the heat does not help as your feet swell up and makes it easier to get blisters. I would go for trainers to reduce the impact of the cobbles or if not Oofos style platform flip flop sandalsto cushion impact or ones with adjustable straps to allow for feet swelling up

Ireallydohope · 29/03/2023 20:41

I would only ever wear trainers on a city break no matter how hot the weather.

But if I had no choice I'd probably wear my old leather fit flops the ones with the big soles

Ireallydohope · 29/03/2023 20:45

Maybe you need different trainers.

I can't say my feet ever get hot in trainers not even in the hottest parts of the world I've travelled to.

handsoffate · 29/03/2023 20:53

I live in Merrell Kahunas in summer, so comfy and I can walk miles in them but very far from stylish!

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 29/03/2023 20:56

My Teva midforms are the comfiest sandals EVER - I'd take them and my Mayarls on the principle that I can do a day's walking in the Tevas and then switch to the Mayaris for the evening. I'd also take my classic Keds as a just in case option!

Blackoutbeans · 29/03/2023 20:57

As many have already mentioned, for Rome you will probably be better off with socks and trainers with a good chunky sole.
We've managed to get blisters in Vans and Converse and suffered for weeks after, the cobbled streets are a nightmare but is still worth it, blisters and all.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 29/03/2023 21:02

I bought some tan sandals from Heavenly Feet last summer specifically for a month long trip to Australia. Most comfy sandals ever and we walked miles. I can't see the same ones this year, but they had memory foam, arch support and fastened with Velcro.

No idea whether these are stylish, but Pikolinos do more “closed” sandals but still not too hot, and they’re very comfy, I have these:

There are also Spanish brands that do trainers with the sides in mesh type fabric, so cooler than normal trainers, but I am not sure if you can easily get them in the UK (Victoria or Aro brand, for example)

I've had my Tevas for 27years. They've been all around the world in all terrains, from stony paths, to salty seas and city cobbles. They're still as strong and comfy as ever!

APurpleSquirrel · 29/03/2023 21:29

Highly recommend these by Trespass - walking sandals but not so clumpy & I've walked loads in them including on cobbles, sand etc:

I ended up with huge blisters from walking around in the heat in Rome in good quality sandals, my feet were also black within 5 minutes.

I'd really recommend wearing comfy, lightweight trainers with thin trainer socks and cool clothing.
