Dd age 11 and upper lip hair

DD is 11 and has had noticeable dark hair on her top lip for some time. She's never mentioned it so I've assumed she's not been bothered by it. However, she's recently shaved it, I suspect using her DB's electric razor.

I've said to her that she shouldn't shave in case it comes back stubbly (I'm guessing it won't after just one shave) and that if it bothers her, we can find better ways to remove it. However, I'm not actually sure what to suggest!

I wax at home and it hurts like hell, she definitely won't be up for that. Ditto threading. Not keen on creams as they always seem so harsh and chemical. I've got an ipl machine - should I take advantage of thr fact that she has shaved and try and zap the area? I've never been brave enough to use it on my own face, so that puts me off. What else? Take her to a salon for a quicker wax than I could manage??

Suggestions welcome 😀

I endured years of embarrassment and teasing as a kid and adult for facial hair.

Recently got one of those women's rechargeable facial shavers (the ones with two rings of cutters, not just one) and a quick ten seconds whip round my lip and chin on the morning sets me up for the day.

Wish they'd had them when I was younger.

I know you’ve mentioned you aren’t keen on creams but Veet have a specific facial hair removal kit for sensitive skin which has always worked brilliantly for me. It comes with a tube of moisturiser as well as the hair removal cream.

Creams burned my skin.
If there's anything more embarrassing than a bit of facial hair, it's a big red angry top lip and chin that lasts for days.

Some places do electrolysis, but prob not until age 14 ish. It's painful so I would recommend putting some Emla numbing cream on for a while before a treatment. I have electrolysis on my chin now but at 14i sh my mum took me to get my upper lip done. It's permanent but each hair needs to be treated a number of times.

At your daughter's age I was saved by Jolen creme bleach.

I would suggest threading ?

StressedSandwich · 31/03/2023 01:12

Them lil face razors do the job. I have really dark hair on my face too and use them myself.

LotteLomax · 31/03/2023 01:41

Electrolysis when she’s old enough. In the meantime shaving so that the hair root does not get altered.

Dd was exactly the same - now 15. We had it waxed a couple of times but her choice is to use the Flawless touch normally about once a week .

KatyS36 · 31/03/2023 16:26

I shave here, so quick, cheap and easy. No problem with regrowth either.

imayhavelostmymarbles · 31/03/2023 16:41

Posters mentioning Flawless touch, which one do you have? Brows?

EstherHazy · 31/03/2023 16:52

I'm sure you don't need telling, but I'd also really talk to her about how it's a choice some women make and not others and she doesn't have to do anything at all. I'm pretty hairy with dark hair which shows (latino dad to blame) but have never touched my 'tash'. I have however plucked out massive black hairs from a large mole on my neck for the last 20 years, and started attacking big dark granny hairs from the bottom of my chin that have started cropping up about two years ago (am 38). It's just the middle ground I'm comfy with, probably a lot of people notice it but I'm a pretty low-maintenance style person generally with no makeup etc and I figure my tash is not at a repellant level (unlike my mole hairs!)

I just want to mention what with everyone chipping in on solutions, one solution is to do nothing - she shouldn't feel pressured. Tbh sounds like you're really thoughtful already so best of luck with it all whatever happens - growing up is tough!

Maybe if you took her to have it waxed, as you're considering, it would feel less painful? You know, you don't expect it, they count to 3 and do it on 2 😂They do it really quickly. I think threading hurts, or at least hurts me when having eyebrows done, not sure about upper lip.

Another vote for threading here. I’ve been threading my upper lip since 11 and it worked beautifully. You could go to a salon (I think a lot of South Asian places would do it) but I learnt how to do it myself from one of my friends and it was easy and quick. At the ripe old age of 25, I went down the IPL route (when I could afford it and was sure that it wouldn’t damage my skin) but until then, threading was fantastic.
