MAC appointment

I'm a total makeup novice and am unable to put on anything more than a tinted moisturiser and lip gloss without looking like a rubbish drag act.

So....I have booked an appointment at Mac tomorrow in the vain hope they can point me in the direction of what I need, what will suit and how to put it on.

Has anyone been to one of these appointments who can tell me what to expect and what information I need to go prepared with.

Thanks

I think they're really good. Have done a few. They used to do your whole face but now I think it's either eyes, or else lips and foundation.
Mac do really good eyeshadows that can make you look strikingly different so I'd definitely go with that. If you don't want crazy colours, ask for an easy everyday look.
They might also be able to recommend the right colour of foundation or even just a cover-up stick.
Brushes are a good buy too.
They will use every product under the sun when you're there and try to encourage you to spend a fortune, so you'll have to narrow it down to the ones you really want.
Personally I'd got for a good blending brush, and an eyeshadow palette. The Times 9 palettes are great and last years.
When you return six empties you get a free lipstick.

Dd2 went to one of these, she came out totally orange 😂 I don’t know if it looked better under the shop lights - there is no natural light where they were in the shop doing the makeover so it’s possible. It wasn’t very nicely blended in with the other base products either but she bought a couple of the things they applied to her and she’s enjoyed using them - I’ve tried a couple of their foundations and never found the right shade annoyingly.
As far as I’m aware they just asked dd how she liked her makeup and what she usually used, she didn’t need to go armed with any information.
You might be better off asking for a natural light look if you’re not used to wearing much makeup - it’s often a shock anyway to see your face with any makeup on if you don’t often wear it! I know it is to me. Although in fairness you might be wanting a more dramatic look in which case, ask away!
Dont be pressured into buying anything either, I don’t know if they try and up sell but just be prepared in case.
They always seem a friendly bunch when they’re doing makeup on customers when I walk past so I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Thanks for the info. I definitely don't want to come out looking orange! I'm going to ask for something low key/natural and go for foundation and lipstick and then do eyes another time if it goes well.

I’ve wondered about doing one of those sessions. Please report back and tell us how it went!

It was actually pretty good. I had to choose between eyes or face so chose face. She did me a pretty natural look but one that I can add a bit of shimmer to if I'm going out or tone down for office wear. She was really good at explaining how to apply and blend and matched the colours up really well. I'm really fussy with lip colour and she picked me a colour that I wasn't sure about but it actually looked great on. I would never have picked it myself.

I didn't buy all the products she used because of the cost (not that I asked what anything cost) but I came away with a moisturizer base, foundation, concealer, bronzer, tint strobe thing, lipstick and a couple of brushes. Luckily DP came round the corner as she was putting it though the till and offered to pay. His jaw nearly hit the floor when he saw the total (£220).

Got blue light discount of 15% so worth remembering that if you have one.
