Skin and me site and been prescribed metronidazole

Megsh85 · 21/03/2023 23:52

I signed up to skin and me asking that my priority goal be for tackling fine lines and acne on my cheeks.

After sending photos of my face they think I have rosacea and want me to tackle that first/ they’ve started me on metronidazole 1% cream alongside niaminicide and Azeliac acid.

should I see the GP first before trusting this site as this is an antibiotic? I have had red cheeks and nose for years, with sort of acne on my cheeks with it and to be honest I’ve never really thought about it and thought I just had a red face. I use a full coverage foundation everyday otherwise my redness comes through, by the end of the day jt does anyway, it is a pain.

anyone used this site before?

I used Skin & Me for ages - mine was the retinol one, but it was great. (I should sign up for it again, actually. Anyone got a referral code?)

I assume if they're allowed to prescribe an antibiotic (even a topical one) they'd have to be regulated in some way or a nurse prescriber/doctor would have to okay it at their end - they have actual dermatologists and nurse prescribers on staff. It's a relatively low strength antibiotic, it's worth a try!

How did you find the retinol work for you? Does it settle?

I have recently started back up and I'm going through a purge, which is making my face so sore.

Here's a code for you 😊

I'd probably give it a go. They are prescribers of medicine and according to their website their staff include consultant dermatologists, so not like over the counter advice.

My DH has rosacea and often had the redness and acne. It can be so sore; so would be great to know if it works!

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/03/2023 00:08

Their prescribers (who action your prescription) are qualified to do so. They are pharmacist independent prescribers with dermatology specialities and are all required to be GMC registered. This info is available on the skin & me website where it also adds that they will have a minimum of 8 years study and practical experience and hold Master of Pharmacy degrees.

I can't see any reason you'd need to additionally speak to the GP. It's a low dose topical antibiotic routinely prescribed for skin conditions. If you don't want it in the treatment dose then email them and ask them to change it and they will (but obviously are then less likely to see changes.

I've used them for ages and they're great, very responsive and a good product that has improved my skin. I really think it's fine OP, and I hope it works for you.

Amazing - thanks! Just ordered now using your code :)

When I used it last time I really suffered at first with the retinol and I had used high street stuff before, so I was a bit concerned - but once it settled, it was really effective. I guess with it being prescription strength it's a bit more of an adjustment (and that purge phase is so painful, you have my sympathies) but it was worth sticking with!

polkapolkadot · 22/03/2023 09:33

Thanks @housemaus. I will persevere with it - but it is sore today!

Hope you get on ok with the order 😊

Cheeks is an unusual site for acne but the classic site for rosacea, so they may well be right.

Megsh85 · 22/03/2023 10:41

its my cheeks and nose that are always red, and I have raised bumps on my cheeks and nose. Spots but not whiteheads/blackheads so maybe they are right. The redness gets worse when I drink alcohol but I thought that happened to everyone

It really doesn't happen to everyone. I think you have spots due roseate and not typical acne.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/03/2023 18:45

Word of warning, metranidzole is brutal. It can have nasty side effects and definitely DO NOT drink alcohol whilst on it.

It is often prescrived for deep soft tissue infections - I had a five day course for acute necrotising gingivitis and it made me as sick as a dog.

Worked though!

Rageasaurus · 22/03/2023 18:47

@Ginmonkeyagain I assume that was tablets? The OP has been prescribed a cream - shouldn't have any of those systemic side effects.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/03/2023 18:51

Ahh! Yes then it hopefully won't be as horrible!

It's powerful stuff.

I've just had it from skin and me in topical form for perioral dermatitis and it was fine. Def no nasty side effects. And no need not to drink alcohol thankfully!

Echoing this. Took for a infected tooth once and had anxiety and palpitations and had to stop taking it.

ladygindiva · 22/03/2023 19:14

Catching up, was tablets so won't be the same as cream.

Thanks for the code I’ve just placed an order and excited to see what it’s like!

Going to post my referral code on the promo code board Grin

You have described symptoms of rosacea

Flockameanie · 23/03/2023 14:16

You can get metrodinazole cream from the GP for the fraction of the cost of a Skin + Me or Dermatica subscription. I discovered this when I had a flare up of awful perioral dermatitis from my Dermatica prescription!

polkapolkadot · 23/03/2023 15:04

You're welcome @pertbootywish. According to all sources, it takes a few weeks to notice a difference. Also, if the ingredients are too strong, use with moisturiser and alternate nights when you use it 😊

How are you getting on Maus?

I think my face has settled a bit since I removed my astringent toner and just use a gentle cleanser. I use the Skin+Me stuff every other night, sometimes taking a couple of days off of my face is too dry. Into sure I'm noticing a great different. Definitely more spotty, but skin does feel slightly tighter, so not amazing yet.
