Is house of colour ever wrong?

I'm seeing lots of threads popping up about personal colour analysis. Is house of colour the best one to use? Price seems quite steep at over £200! I'm wondering how often they get it wrong. I don't want to be spending £ if its not accurate, but I'm slightly dubious as surely a lot of this is down to personal taste?

I used Color Me Beautiful way back in the 1980s and you can easily see for yourself whether the colours work.

She put a white scarf around my neck and then a cream one. The difference was immediate and very obvious. White just drains me. None of the blues were great, even the least "blue" wasn't really flattering.

I now know which colour tones to go for although I don't use the original colour swatches I was given any more as I don't need to. I can tell if the undertones are warm then it'll look good on me. Anything with a cold/blue tone is a hard pass.

From what I see they don't tell people they're neutral, ie have elements of cool and warm.

Are they more likely to get you wrong if you're neutral? I saw a lot of blonde winters on their Instagram and I'm not sure I agree with some...

I agree. Years ago I was told I was an Autumn, yet I feel I look better in cool colours, so I've never really been convinced.

BigLump · 21/03/2023 12:30

@balconylife did you go with house of colour or someone else? Lots of people raving about them on here and I just don't think it's that scientific...

Yes I think mine was wrong. Diagnosed as a 'paintbox spring', much much more likely to be an autumn but can't afford to go to another person! But it did help me think about colours a lot more. It definitely helped that I know I am for sure warm and not cool.

Emily at style me happy seems like a good option. It’s all online and loads cheaper. Just colour analysis is £35, but there are other options too. I’ve followed her on Facebook and Instagram for a while and I’m seriously considering getting a colour analysis with her. Lots of people seem happy with the service. Here’s her website if you’re interested.

Did you 'see' that something was off during draping? It seems like such an expensive mistake I wouldn't want to make! I'm amazed at the number of posters recommending it...

Maybe try the free app that analyses a photo of you. Do it a few times and see what you think of the results. That's what I've done. I'm definitely a summer and swing between cool and soft. I've really loved getting more colourful clothes and moving away from true black. I always knew faded black suited me way better..

Lightninginabox · 21/03/2023 15:58

Which app is that?

raffegiraffe · 21/03/2023 16:35

I used one call dressika

raffegiraffe · 21/03/2023 16:38

And also another one 'My best colours'. They both typed me the same

newtb · 21/03/2023 16:45

The colours that suited me when I was 30, no longer do so 37 years later. I've gone a lot 'cooler'. Used to be an 'autumn' which I loved, but can now wear black, pink although I still look dead in white.

MistySkiesAreGone · 21/03/2023 21:45

I think you need to do research beforehand and go in with an idea of what you might be tonally, but don't tell them iyswim. That was my test as I was sure I was warm and my consultant got that right.

You are not trying to exactly match the colours you are given, but you want harmony.

If you find out you are one season and want to be another season, you could wear the closest shades from your palette that match what you commonly think of in association with the season you wanted to be, so taking inspiration from the season you love.

I love knowing my best shades, it opens up a lot.

I can recommend style me happy, Emily is great. If you have any questions she will answer. Nowhere near as expensive. I've found her report really helpful.

GettingStuffed · 23/03/2023 09:59

If you're neutral I think they try to put you in the nearest box, there will be some blonde winters but they're likely to be naturally white blond rather than golden blonde.

I have creamy skin, mousy hair and blue green eyes, so I'm nearest to an autumn but can wear most spring and also the less strong summer and winter colours.
