Job interview outfit for Head of Marketing role

Please can you let me know what I should wear to a job interview for a Head of Marketing position?

I've not been interviewed for over 5 years, but earlier this month I had a job interview for a marketing manager position that I didn't get.

I wore my trusty black suit (Boden) with cream blouse and black flat pointy loafers.

What had seemed classic, now seemed really stale and lame. I felt I looked really out of touch - like I was a business woman from the 1980s. I didn't get the job because I'm sure I gave the impression I didn't fit in.

I've applied for a Head of Marketing role which I'm really excited about. It would be an absolutely wonderful position. I really want to get my look right for the interview.

I ordered a green/slate midi skirt, black body and black jacket to see if that was more modern. But felt I looked like a witch 😂

I'm 42, 5'8 and size 12/15 - can you recommend me some outfits to try?

My OH is a Charity CEO. They certainly seem to dress down (unless they've got important visitors) and they are very much a customer facing operation. He wears jeans, a smart shirt and a jumper for work mostly. Even when he goes to meetings with other charities/organisations he wears the same. Things have definitely got more casual in the last few years.

I'd go for something smart casual but in brighter colours. Black and dark colours are definitely for funerals of old people these days!

If you want to wear a jacket I'd look for one made of jersey so it has some stretch and isn't too sharp or formal something like this, paired with wide leg trousers and a silk shirt

Or a blazer that isn't part of a suit

I'd wear slightly heeled shoes with no toes showing. wide leg trousers and a really smart shirt and suit jacket with hair up in a ponytail or hair curled

M&S have some lovely bright coloured blazers in at the moment (relaxed fit with 3/4 length sleeves). Depending on the industry, I would usually wear something like a blazer with a smart neutral top and either cigarette style or wide leg trousers with loafers or flats. I don't think most people dress very formally for interview these days but it is important you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you are wearing. Good luck!
