11 year old skin

Dd is 11 (on Saturday) and has a bee in her bonnet about not being able to have a skincare routine like the one I use for my almost 40 year old skin (🙄)

That said, I'm not against her wanted to get into good habits with looking after herself. She currently uses a gentle cleanser from CeraVe and a moisturiser from boots (cucumber something). She wears sunscreen daily so introducing double cleansing with a light oil might be a good idea. No serums or actives or anything though, I think she's far too young for all of that.

Can anybody share what their 11 year olds are using on their skin? I've bought her a face roller thingy to give her the illusion that she's an esthetician in training, she would have half of Sephora in her bedroom if I allowed it!

I did say specifically that she wasn't able to have a full on routine like mine but a spotty hormonal pre-teen girl living in a hot climate using the occasion face mist or sheet mask in between washing and moisturising her face every day isn't setting her up to be a skinfluencer.

As some have pointed out, she has a routine, she just doesn't realise it 😄. Her birthday is coming up so I'm going to get her a new cleanser and moisturiser in a pretty bag and will probably get a cleansing oil since she's using sunscreen daily.

Wow are boys doing this too? or is this just the ultimate sexist teaching of our daughters that they must look perfect with glowing skin all their lives and boys and men can just look how they are?

I think everyone needs to wash their face and protect it with SPF
The rest is individual. Some men are really into skincare or beard oils or whatever
Some men really could use some moisturiser but have never been introduced to it! Or don't think it's "manly" to use hand cream

My dad complained his legs were flaky and dry, when I said body lotion he looked at me like I was an alien. Introduced him to a shower oil and now he thinks it's the best thing invented

I just don’t believe there are many men and boys buying into this marketing.

My dd who’s 10 complains about washing her face, I’m impressed your dd is looking after her skin so young

It's so weird to me how people don't just scroll on past a post asking for product recommendations when they have no products to recommend...

I can't even pinpoint properly what kicked it off but it started round Christmas. She also started to get really obsessive about her teeth, possibly because she knows she going to eventually need braces. We visited the UK and I'd given her a tenner picket money. She bought a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss Confused

I think it's very much about wanting to look after herself more so than falling for marketing ploys if I'm honest. And part of it it was ting to be like her mum which I suspect won't last much longer once she starts secondary school!

Maybe not but I often look at men looking way older than their age, sunburnt with no SPF, dry/flaky skin, redness... and it's stuff than can be helped with skincare
Whether they don't know about it, dismiss it as not needed etc is another thing
My ex said SPF was "for girls" Hmm which is probably why he now looks a decade older with his insistence on not wearing it and burning every year

AHelpfulHand · 15/03/2023 14:53

If she wants to look after herself then this should always be encouraged.

I’ve no recommendations for products for skin so young but she’s going to look fab at 40!

WeCome1 · 15/03/2023 14:57

Not skincare, but my DD has a nice towelling band which helps her feel like a pro when washing her face 😂

Of course they do. If I left my skin until I was 48 I’d look like I’d smoked 50 fags a day.

Apart from the sunscreen, nothing that she does to her face will have any effect longer than a few weeks.

I was at an event recently where I kept quiet about my age, there was a woman same age as me who looked older than I do.

She's just playing with non-active ingredients at the moment. There's worse hobbies and you don't have to spend a fortune to look nice.

WeDontTalkAboutBrunoNoNoNo · 15/03/2023 15:18

Well this is it. If she's looking after herself and having fun while doing it, there's no harm whatsoever. She's not asked about makeup or mentioned anything about her appearance. Just says she wants to look after herself so why not.

I love doing my skincare. Always have a candle and a podcast on and it's a nice relaxing time
Maybe a TK maxx trip if you have one locally, they always have lots of random Korean skincare and sheet masks plus again not £££ and you can avoid the actives
