Dress me for Paris :)

Hi,

Going to Paris in a few weeks and really want to treat myself to some new outfits.

I've been a few times before, but always feel a bit out of place. The first time I went I took loads of dressy dresses and never wore them, as generally speaking the women seem to be much more casual chic than dressy. I don't want to be a sheep, but I also don't want to stand out and look too 'try hard'.

I still want to get dressed up in the evening and controversially, wear heels! Apparently nobody wears heels in Paris anymore, but I'm ignoring that 😂 That's not to say I wouldn't also like some flats/pumps recommendations.

To help, I'm late 30's, size 10, inverted triangle shape, so quite difficult to dress. I have a waist, it's just high. Trousers have to have pockets at the side to balance me out and dresses and skirts need to be A line for the same reason. I suit straight leg or skinny over boot cut, which I know makes no sense with my shape. I'm quite pale with long dark, highlighted hair and green eyes.

Budget is mid range. Happy to pay a bit more for something perfect.

Thanks very much 😊

Just keep it simple. I'd stick with some nice dark jeans, tshirts or floaty blouses and a couple of blazers in some nice bright colours. It'll still be cold in a couple of weeks so a nice smart looking winter coat and maybe a lighter mac. Scarves to accessorise. Either ankle boots or knee highs and maybe a pair of converse. Shirt dresses work well if you fancy wearing a dress without being too dressy and will look nice with knee high boots. Stick to colours that go well together so you can mix and match.

@Laurdo thank you. Accessorising with scarves is a good idea 👍

It's hard at this time of year as the weather can be very unpredictable. I've seen a lot of rain in Paris, though! Personally I'd probably go for mom jeans/cool knitwear/trainers/cross body bumbag (le sac banane!) for daytime and maybe wide-leg trousers and a relaxed blazer for evening? You could wear the wide-legs with trainers or with Esska-type heels if you wanted to dress them up. I agree that generally people are more casual chic then dressy in Paris, although you wouldn't think that from watching EiP 😁

Emily looks very much like an American in Paris!

I think smart casual chic is the way to go. I was there a couple of weeks ago and didn’t see any heels other than heeled boots (but maybe the season).

@Laquila yes, very unpredictable weather! We went last year this sort of time of year and we got lots of lovely spring sunshine, apart from one day. Think we were lucky though, from the sounds of it. Really don't want to have to take a thick coat with me though if I can get away with it.

Yes just back from Paris and fitted in completely in a hideous long puffer jacket, dm shoes, mom jeans and polo necks. No evidence of anyone getting dressed up except for some fashion week people coming back on the Eurostar. Wear comfortable and non slip shoes for the metro, we walked for MILES

Carrotcakebreakfast · 13/03/2023 15:47

@ismu we're Ubering everywhere I think. Going with an older relative who has a bit of a phobia of the underground. Not sure what they think they Eurostar is 😬

It's a shame that getting dressed up isn't the done thing generally in Paris. I really want to 😂

@Carrotcakebreakfast I'm sure you could find somewhere 🤣🤣 Place de Vosges?
Be careful with the Ubers in Paris they have lots of fake ones at the moment. If your relative hates the metro remember there's also the overground.

botemp · 13/03/2023 17:12

Place des Vosges is full of students. Avenue Montaigne is still kind of dressy, new money and rich tourists kind of dressy but you can dress up there as you like. I wouldn't ordinarily recommend L'Avenue brasserie there as the food is very mediocre and overpriced but it's dress up central and the terrace makes for good people watching with the Dior flagship just across the road. The Dior Gallery/Museum is just behind there, book tickets in advance.
