Would you go to a college salon for highlights?

I really cannot justify the cost of my usual hairdresser since she's upped her prices. My last highlight job cost £120 with no cut. She's excellent of course but I just can't afford it anymore.

Our local college has a salon and a full head is £40. Would you go? Am I right to assume the job would be supervised?

I would, the students will be supervised so you're less likely to get the stylist going wrong than a newly trained on on their own

chipsandpeas · 12/03/2023 11:20

yes i would, the trainees/students are supervised so its unlikely to go wrong

PatsyJStone · 12/03/2023 11:26

Yes I know people who do this, you may well have level 2/3 students who have two years experience. They will definitely be supervised.
You could also see which hairdressers have their own training academy as they may also have much cheaper options.
Have you looked at other hairdressers costs? You will find they vary.

Crumpetdisappointment · 12/03/2023 11:28

i did
but the back highlights went all the way down to the neck, i had short hair, so i looked like an owl
she/he, cant remember now, was supervised.

Floisme · 12/03/2023 11:33

I'd happily go for other treatments. I've also enjoyed fabulous meals cooked by catering students. But I think a haircut that I'd have to live with for the next couple of months is another matter entirely. It would be a last resort for me I'm afraid.

PepperRed · 12/03/2023 11:36

Yes, sometimes the students are very experienced but just need a certificate in certain advanced techniques. I went to school of hairdressing for years and only downside was that was slower than usual if a newcomer. Very supervised.

Other salons in similar region. Cheapest is from £95. I went all over dark to save the money but it's completely washed me out so need some lightness back in my life lol!

I’ve done it, it was great. Just took a bit longer as she had to keep getting the teacher to check it over.

Mars27 · 12/03/2023 12:56

I've been having my hair cut at the Toni & Guy academy for years, lol. Once I made a mistake with a box dye at home (went a few shades lighter than it should) and the girl corrected it to perfection.

I also have massages and other treatments and eat at catering college's restaurants, especially the Westminster College.

You don't know what you're missing 😊

Logonogogo · 12/03/2023 16:12

I go and get a cut, full colour or roots. It takes a little longer than at a commercial salon as they are learning but the money I save by going makes it worth while!

KnittingNeedles · 12/03/2023 16:14

Used to get a perm for £5 at the college back in the early 90s when perms were a thing.

close supervision but that meant the process always took forever as the teacher has to check each stage and ask the students questions. Never had a disaster.

Sleepyteach · 12/03/2023 19:59

I work in a college and I have balayage done in the salon there. Never had an issue, always well supervised and after Easter they are only a month or so from being qualified and doing your hair for £120 a time in your local salon!

ThereIsATInWater · 12/03/2023 20:44

Yep, loads of times.

It takes a while longer but I'm OK with that.

They're supervised and checked the whole time.

Only once it went wrong, but it wasn't the trainees fault.
Didn't worry me to the shock of the tutor!

If the service is good, then why not, we all have to learn and get better some how

RicciardoPerez · 12/03/2023 20:46

Thanks all - I'll phone up and get booked in for after Easter :)

An update.

It was a disaster. Hair is a mess :( I've emailed them to let them know I'm really not happy and I've booked in elsewhere to have it fixed :(

in what way?
did you say it was a disaster at the time out of interest?
