Mauritius in June

Going to Mauritius early June and just wondering if anyone has been there that time of year? We are staying in South of island and I'm aware it's their Winter. Will we still be able to wear swimwear/beach dresses or will it be too chilly?

I travelled here on 3rd June for honeymoon. It was hot, sunny, and we were in swim wear all day, on the beach, swimming in the sea. The water was warm!

It was a few years ago now but in every photo I'm wearing things like linen trousers and short sleeved tops for the evening- so it will have still been pretty warm even when the sun had gone down.

It was a fab holiday, you will have a lovely time!

That is great to hear! We are staying in Outrigger resort but plan on doing few day trips/activities. We are going on 3rd June also. Is it generally laid back beach vibe or do people glam up ?

We go there a lot. Generally chilled and relaxed and you will have a lovely time. South of the Island has much more changeable weather than the North at that time of year so take a cardy or wrap and some linen trousers for the evening so on those days where it is a little chillier you have something to wear. Most hotels expect smarter dressing in the restaurant in the evening but people tend to still wear smart shorts etc. It can rain at that time of year. And when I say rain, I mean tropical downpours so it might be worth taking a small brolly. It usually clears quite quickly though. But I would take some good reading if you can't sit on the beach.

I do also take things like sarongs and wraps for the beach at that time of the year. The wind on the south part of the island can be chilly and they are a good investment for those days you want to sit by the pool but the wind picks up.

We went to that resort for our honeymoon (second week) at the end of May.

It was beautifully warm. The occasional day it was windy which made it feel cooler but TBH it was a relief from the heat and still plenty warm enough to sit outside on a lounger.

What sort of room are you staying in?

And yes as per PP there were some big storms (which I love!) but they were over and done in an hour or so. We just read and watched the lightning ⚡️

I was brought up there from age 3, it was never cold enough for even a cardigan as I recall unless where you are staying has air conditioning.
Please be aware of local customs, a lot of people go topless on the beach but this is very offensive to local people.

From memory, like all similar countries, you should also make sure you can be reasonably covered for any visits to religious sites.

You don't need to be dressed like a nun but the usual covered shoulders, cleavage and knee length attire is respectful. Otherwise it's like walking into a CofE Sunday morning service in a bodycon dress and four inch heels. That being said I'm assuming OP has some travel experience under their belt if they're doing Mauritius (could be wrong I guess)

Thanks for your replies. Wheresmymojo , we have a Deluxe Family Ocean view room and Deluxe Ocean view as we have our 4 kids(!) 16yrs - 23yrs. Its great to hear that the weather will be warm and not too hot. We were in St.Lucia last summer and we had some tropical downpours but it didn't bother us. We are always respectful when travelling to certain areas..with shoulders and knees covered...have been to Bali, Thailand etc so used to covering up. I always have a sarong/wrap in my bag and generally wear maxi skirts/ sundress when sightseeing.

I didn't think you need to do modest clothing in Mauritius ? Not in my experience anyways I didn't come across that.

Thingamebobwotsit · 11/03/2023 11:18

@NeedNwJeans Most people will respect religious sites in Mauritius and cover up a bit but locals won't frown at you if you don't (although they will talk about you if you wander round in not much more than swimwear) but it is generally pretty relaxed. Topless bathing is a no no though. Otherwise you just get hassled.

Just to note all beaches are public beaches in Mauritius so you do get street hawkers. Most are pretty pleasant and it is up to you if you engage or not.

OP if you are in the South try and get to Blue Bay. One of the best beaches they have. Public beach. Packed with families having picnics on a Sunday.

I would always cover up (shoulders with a scarf) in a religious sites, and don't really sunbathe, even less topless, but my point was outside doing these 2 activities, I wouldn't worry having to dress too modestly when out and about. I visited plenty of places with locals (charity, school etc) and normal tourist clothes were fine.
