Curly girl questions

Hi, my hair has been going curly since I hit the menopause/ went grey.
It's quite curly underneath but the top layer is poker straight.

Currently I blow dry it, I have a king bob but at the first hint of damp it goes frizzy and is far higher maintenance than I would like.

I've heard of the curly girl method but not researched it properly, once you do it do you have to stick with it or can you choose curly day and straight days?

Any easy recommendations or success stories for trying curly girl would be much appreciated, thank you

I probably should add that shampoo needs to be for grey/ white hair but not too purple as I'm currently sporting a blue rinse effect!!

Curly girl is a bit like going vegetarian- it’s not part usually time but I guess ultimately you do what works for your hair. I am broadly CG. The important things are to avoid silicone containing products as they dry the hair. Avoid shampoo that contains SLS again because it’s drying, and dry hair is a common feature of being curly. It also makes frizz worse. I wash with silicone free conditioner from Faith in Nature, I use an SLS free shampoo a few times a year if my hair is very dirty, or I got chlorine in it at the swimming pool etc. It has worked for me, my hair used to have all the charm of a Brillo pad. Here is an interview with the founder of the method for some background www.newsweek.com/what-curly-girl-method-lorraine-massey-cgm-beginners-cg-friendly-products-1608253

I do a sort of hybrid version of the CGM. I wash with curly shampoo and conditioner (currently Frizz ease curly) then run a wide toothed comb through it in the shower when it's got conditioner on. Apply curlsmith weightless leave in cream when sopping wet and use flat hands to remove excess moisture. Then I wrap in a microfibre turban while I do face products and make up etc. I put a wide toothed comb through it to style it then use a spray water bottle with a small amount of conditioner in, gently scrunch the curls back then leave it to air dry. I wash it every 2-3 days, so on non wash days I spritz it with the spray again and use my fingers to style (no comb on dry hair!) also I only use silk pillow cases. It's made a big difference.

Thank you so much for this, which is very timely. My hair is doing exactly the same! @AlwaysLatte , I've just orderd the products you suggested and fingers crossed.

My hair sounds just like yours OP. Since menopause. Poof. I have tried all manner of methods but I've realised one non negotiable with curly hair is not to touch your hair if at all possible. Also don't brush. I can't handles these so I've given up

Thanks for the replies. I think it's not for me but I will take the recommendations to avoid sls in shampoos as that can only help

Hi , managing your curls should be simple in my eyes. It shouldn’t be rocket science as you’re accepting your curls being natural and celebrating them as they sit on your head. You have to follow your own path and do what feels right for you there is no wrong answer. Every single curly person is different xx
