Talk to me about your helix piercing

I am. considering getting a helix piercing. There is a tattoo studio in my town with an amazing reputation for piercings (needle, not gun) and I spoke to the piercing professional there today.

She said

a) don't have it pierced on the side you sleep on (I do have a preferred side but turn a bit in the night)

b) it will be about 8 weeks before you can change the piercing (and it needs the usual cleaning)

c) it will be about six months before you can completely forget it is there.

I suspect I am a bit too much of a wimp and like my sleep too much to have it disturbed by a piercing, but I am interested in whether this chimes with your experience?

I've ordered some tiny temporary tattoos and honestly that might scratch the itch without months of pain!

Do it!
I've got double helix, conch and tragus in separate ears and can sleep comfortably after about 6 months. Obv didn't have them all done at the same time but they do settle and I love having customisable ears!

Never managed to keep a helix. Love my forward helix though, it's my favorite piercing

I have a double helix (but done separately) and was at the forget it's there stage by four months. I had it done with it bar and changed to a hoop after six weeks, I do heal fast though.

I’ve had 2 goes at it and both times it just wouldn’t settle. I have lower lobes x2, a conch, a daith and my nose pierced and the helix was by far the most temperamental.

Mine took almost 6 months before I could change it. I could sleep on it though but took a while. I had my daith done a year ago and it's just healing now. Still haven't had it changed.

RedLeopardSilk · 09/03/2023 21:55

Just to add - the piercings that have settled most quickly with me are the ones with bars, rather than hoops. Apart from tragus (which took longer) they've all taken about 4 months before I felt they were ready to change.

FatCatt · 09/03/2023 22:01

Mine took about 4 months to fully heal. My daith on the other hand took close to 12 months!

I had mine done just after new year. Absolutely no problems! It’s on the side I sleep on and I was aware of it being there but it wasn’t too bad. It genuinely didn’t hurt having it done either. I absolutely LOVE it.

FatCatt · 09/03/2023 22:03

I slept on mine from day one and changed it to a ring after 10 weeks. By 3 months I caught it on things and it didn’t make any difference/ I didn’t feel it

IHateLegDay · 09/03/2023 23:19

I had a triple forward helix and LOVED it!
The problem I had was that it's an easy area to get infected and once one got infected, they all got infected. (Different for you if you just get one)
I ended up taking them out.

savethatkitty · 09/03/2023 23:25

A what now?

IHateLegDay · 09/03/2023 23:36

This was mine (I had the side of my head shaved). I was early 20s and post-break up 😂 lots of piercings, tattoos and crazy hair

17 piercings in each ear, so multiple helixes and cartilage piercings. No point saying don’t get one on the side you sleep on Grin Never forget I have them (toss and turn all night, every night) but feather pillows help immensely as you can push your fist into them to make a gap for whichever ear you're lying on. Just keep it clean and Prontolind spray helps when you develop the inevitable lump.

I had mine done about 25 years ago. It wasn't painful to do but it was very angry and temperamental afterwards, and hurt periodically for years. It was only when I changed it to a very, very fine-gague ring that it properly calmed down. I do love it, though.
