Not looking a state on holiday.

How can I look effortless on a hot and sunny holiday?

I saw some ladies last time I went and they just seemed to have it nailed perfectly with black, casual linen style dresses and flats. I however was in a bright pink halter neck, trainers and demin shorts. My hair goes a murky ginger in the sun and I'm fairly pale. Size 14 with weight on belly/hips.

I'm planning to fake tan and maybe put a brown dye on my hair.

Can I have some clothing tips/examples?
Thank you!

Aveda do a sunscreen for hair, it’s very effective.

JaneJeffer · 31/03/2023 16:02

They are frumpy, aging and unflattering whatever the style.
I don't agree with this statement.

I think shorts are one of the more of the more challenging garments to wear, but some people pull them off with aplomb. Those people are a rare breed though. If you've got narrow hips and thighs they can work.

JaneJeffer · 31/03/2023 16:38

I have neither narrow hips nor thighs but I look acceptable in shorts.

Myjobisanightmare · 31/03/2023 17:02

last time I did that was a holiday in rome/Florence up until that point I had a holiday wardrobe we didn’t have much money and out came my holiday clothes every year except we didn’t normally go to places like above and it was mortifying so many chic people like you described and I vowed that it would never happen again if wouldn’t wear it for a lunch out on a hot summers day in a UK then I shouldn’t own it now so now I have cotton or linen things in plain neutrals that I can put outfits together easily and they’re just in my wardrobe not in the holiday clothes bag!!!

Shorts come in so many lengths it’s probably very easy to get it wrong.

@userxx these are my trousers, they also come in linen....I've been wearing them for years, higher on my waist with trainers or Birkenstocks and lower on my hips with heels. The deep smocked waist is great as it doesn't dig in anywhere.

Oh nice.... thanks for the link 👍

Embrace your gorgeous colouring! You're not pale but porcelain! Wearing colours that you love and make your natural colouring shine. Fake tan if you want but do you really need too.......shimmer moisturizer will make you glow....but naturally 😍

Keep it simple. I like a white or black cotton maxi dress, simple cut with tan sandals or black havaiana flip flops. Sunglasses and a straw bag. A simple kaftan to throw over bikini/costume on the beach.
Re shorts, the shorter the better. Short shorts are far more flattering for all legs than the ones that come halfway down the thigh.

Love those trousers @Rina66

How do you get a sun hat to the destination in one piece ?

I've got a packable Panama from Seafolly. Had it a long time but it still looks good.

Just echoing the comments on here, during the day I stick to a tried and trusted palette of neutrals - light cheesecloth maxis or shorts with linen shirt over. Sunhat and big sunnies and stylish beach bag. I've got a couple of cotton pull on skirts that I bought on the market, one in black and white and one in red and white. I pull them up to wear as knee length strapless dresses. We go to a little coastal village in Greece and I'm very conscious about being respectably attired so no just sitting at a bar/restaurant for lunch without a cover up over swimwear, nothing too short if I'm walking to the village etc.

In the evening I favour linen trousers or brighter maxis with beaded sandals and a straw clutch. Nice costume jewellery, possibly a bit chunkier than I would wear normally (but don't overdo it!). Barely any make-up - touch of bronzer, light eye liner, mascara and light lip gloss. But of shimmer on cheekbones/decollete.

It's taken me all these years but at 62 I think I've finally got it right (for me at least!).

I got these in gold a couple of years ago and they are so soft and comfy, I'd definitely recommend.

As for straw bags, depends on how much you want to spend. M&S usually do a good one each year and I saw nice ones in Primark recently.

(I appreciate this is a really old thread, but still relevant!)

@Rina66 can I ask what the length is in the trousers, I'm petite so wondering if they will be too long, thanks

EstherGreenwood63 · 22/05/2025 19:28

@LifeInAHamsterWheel I have those in chestnut brown. They are incredibly comfy aren't they? And a total bargain.

Ak732087D · 22/05/2025 20:55

Bit late in the thread but I think secretive to look at outfits as a whole. Many people look at pieces and think ‘I like that punk frilled top. I like these cut off denims. I like these sneakers. I like this bag. But all together it’s hot mess.

if the item has say frills then don’t wear it with fringed edged denim shorts. Infact if it’s bright pink and frilly then consider wearing it with a very understated neutral. Not blue denim. Too much going on looks messy. Head to toe tonal linen like chic because nothing is visually fighting.
