Oily skin help

sammylady37 · 08/03/2023 12:36

I’m wondering if anyone could advise me here please.

I have oily skin, particularly on my forehead and cheeks, and am a little prone to blackheads on the cheeks too. My skin is also quite sensitive, I have rosacea and it gets irritated with certain/too many products.

My current routine is cerave wash and a moisturizer from The Ordinary, the one with niacinamide. I’ve tried La roche posay, cetaphil, cerave moisturizer, as well as more expensive products, but they haven’t helped.

My rosacea is more or less under control, but my biggest problem is the oily skin. By midday, I literally have an oil slick on my forehead, it feels and looks dreadful and means I can’t wear make up properly.

Is there anything I can use that will reduce this without irritating my rosacea? Happy to spend on the right product.

Thanks!

I should also add that I’m not great with routines that involve multiple products, I’m a believer in ‘less is more’!

I think you are along the right lines with your products, some of us are just born oily.

Have you tried blotting sheets?
Also I think mineral powder foundation is good for oily skin rather than cream formulas, eg Bare Minerals.

Have you tried Dr Hauscha Purifying Cream and Normalising Oil? the former will clean without irritating your skin, and the latter will keep your skin non-shiny without drying it out. There are trial kits available.

I can't answer if it's ok for rosacea, but I have oily skin and I used Mac's pressed blot powder at various points throughout the day. Always use a brush though, not the little powder puff things they come with.

Haven’t tried those, will look into them, thanks for suggestion

I tried bare minerals before but never liked the look of it on me, it seemed to cake.
i use blotting sheets but am hoping to find a skincare solution which means I don’t need them!

I wouldn't get blotting sheets - over time they cause you to produce more oils. Have you tried skin and me? I've got acne prone and oily skin and it's been wonderful. One moisturizer once a day.

Ringmaster27 · 08/03/2023 18:13

I know it sounds counterproductive…but hear me out 😂I have always had oily skin, and suffered from acne for nearly half my life, totally battered my skin with harsh products, oil-free everything etc.
Then came across an article about oil cleansing and it’s been a total gamechanger. The idea is oil breaks down oil. So by cleansing with a non-comedogenic oil (like jojoba oil), it breaks down the excess sebum and dirt while also moisturising, so it tricks your skin into thinking it’s already hydrated enough so it doesn’t over-produce it’s natural oil to compensate like it does with oil-stripping products.
Has worked wonders for me! My makeup is no longer melting off by mid morning

sammylady37 · 08/03/2023 21:11

Ok so, stupid question alert… how do you actually cleanse with an oil? Just rub it on and wipe off or mix with water or…? Do you mind me asking what oil you use?

That's really interesting @Ringmaster27. I had heard about this but was always to scared to give it a try. I was worried it would make it worse or give me spots!

SunUpSunDown · 09/03/2023 20:10

Just to second what Ringmaster said. I started religiously double oil cleansing about three months ago, and it has made a huge difference. My acne is so much better, and my skin so much less oily.

Basically my routine is:

AM: I just use my natural conditioner to rinse off my face in the shower (it's very gentle and doesn't strip my skin), then serum before I apply my mineral makeup (Inika liquid foundation and Barefaced Beauty mineral finishing powder).

I may have to gently blot my face once during the day when working somewhere with lots of heating or air-con, but that's all...so much better than I used to be before double cleansing!

PM: double cleanse with natural products (both oil based), then light moisturiser before bed.

A gentle face mask 1-2 times a week (never harsh scrubs as that ends up in breakouts).

The only thing I might change soon is using a primer, as my pores are quite large. However, since the one I want is ££, I'm waiting a bit!

Hope you find something that works for you.

SunUpSunDown · 09/03/2023 20:11

Ooh, and just to add how I actually do it. I rub it in well, then cleanse with a warm cloth, then repeat the process.

junglistmassive · 09/03/2023 20:19

I have/had extremely oily skin and I think I was using products that were too harsh. I read on a previous thread about rose hip oil and thought I'd try it - so far it's been great. My skin isn't completely oil free but it's not like an oil slick and it really has made a huge difference. Also if I cut back on bread and sugar and drink more water, my skin improves a lot.

sammylady37 · 09/03/2023 20:24

Are there any particular brands of oil you would recommend?

Being lazy here - see attached photo for the current two I use. Also I have used rose-hip oil to good effect.

Oily skin help

I have SUCH oily skin. To the point where I can't wear normal mascara as the oil on my cheeks where it touches causes it to melt and it is smudged by the middle of the day. What I have found works, after years of trial and error:

  • no cleaners that are marketed as for oily skin - this seems to make my skin produce more oil. Hot cloth cleanser does the job fine.
  • gel moisturiser (no creams)
  • ELF poreless putty primer or Benefit Professional (again no creams. That Bobbi Brown one everyone raves about made the situation way worse)
  • Lisa Eldridge foundation or MAC liquid Studio Fix foundation with MAC Studio Fix powder on top to finish it off. I had high hopes for Bare Minerals matte powder (marketed for oily skin) but that had melted by lunch. Il Makiage separated and looked patchy. Most cheaper brands do too, but Bourgeois Healthy Mix was good
  • I carry a powder with me (currently trialling the L'oreal True Match pressed powder). Blot well half way through the day with tissue paper and pop a bit of powder over. I have to continue blotting though every so often through the afternoon
  • Always a tubing mascara
junglistmassive · 09/03/2023 20:53

I'm using Rio Rosa Rosquetta pure organic rose hip oil - it's lovely. My mother is using Neals Yard and gets on very well with it although she no longer has oily skin. I have tried retinols, hyraluronic acids, niacinamides, vit c, etc, but the most success to date is the rose hip oil. My skin is also less red.

So1invictus · 09/03/2023 20:58

Effaclar Duo range for cleansing and hydrating and a salicylic toner.

sammylady37 · 09/03/2023 20:59

Thanks everyone, I have lots to be trying out now!
