Box hair dye recommendations?

20 replies

KnottyKnitting · 07/03/2023 10:25

Fed up of paying the best part of £140 to have my hair coloured, cut and blow dried. Am seriously thinking of having a go at using a box colour.
My hair is mid to dark brown (see photo) and need something that colours grey roots effectively.

Any recommendations?

TIA

I've tried loads over the years and there seems little to tell between them. My current favourite is Superdrug's own brand violet, so I can make the grey purple 😉

Thanks! Will have a look!

Any more suggestions?

I think Excellence is really good

@KnottyKnitting
your hair looks beautiful. Just do roots only with the box dye initially and be aware they are always much darker than you expect them to be I.e dark brown is almost black
there is an online company that sells home colour and there’s an online diy consult, i have looked and it seems good, I’ve seen in recommended in here but name escapes me I’m sure someone else will remember though

I like the Live ones. Vibrant colours and my hair stays shiny for ages.

StopFeckingFaffing · 07/03/2023 12:54

I like Scwarskopf Live and Garnier Nutrisse

Can't justify paying a hairdresser when it's so cheap & easy to use a box dye

unclehairysgirlfriend · 07/03/2023 12:54

I've been using eSalon for the last year or so and I love it. It's a bit more expensive than a box dye from the shops but I've found it to be easy to use and I'm really happy with the results. I used to hate sitting in the hairdressers for hours and paying £££!

Thanks- yes I like the basic colour of my hair and am aware not to go for too darker colour but I am a bit concerned about it being stripy if I only do the roots. At the hairdressers they do the root to start then for the last ten mins just pull it through the rest of my hair.

@KnottyKnitting
i know what you mean but if you just do the roots initially then you will be able to see how it blends with the rest of the hair for next time…..
I posted the link for escalator and another poster recommends it too.

TwoMonthsOff · 07/03/2023 12:57

Escalator ? !! E salon -sorry

WoofWoofBeachLife · 07/03/2023 12:58

Your hair looks lovely, I agree with the just do the roots and not your full head PP. I'd love something to subtly shade my hair and wash out after a couple of washes like the old Shaders and Toners sachets. I'm aiming for super shiny hair now I don't get it coloured. During lockdown I used the Excellance ones and I've also heard the Live are fab too. Boots do a larger range and do celeb stylists ones too that get good reviews xx

I use Casting, which I like as it slowly fade out so avoids a massive line. I tend to go for their "iced" brown variants as they have less red in them and look more like my natural colour.

TreesAtSea · 07/03/2023 13:06

L'Oréal Casting Crème Gloss semi-permanent.
I've grown my grey out now but used it for over 25 years and was always happy with the result. My original hair colour was dark brown and the shades I tried were very close to your photo.

I would do the same with the box dye. It's what I do. Ten minutes isn't long enough for it to fully cover the hair, it just stops any harsh line where your roots are

Is the dye you have now close to your natural colour?

I would buy a dye that specifically says it will cover grey - they have a slightly different composition.

I've used e salon in the past - worked really well but once I was comfortable with the process I bought my own professional dye and I get the same results for cheaper.

KnottyKnitting · 07/03/2023 13:22

@MoneyInTheBananaStand
Yes the colour I have is the same as my natural colour. I am not completely grey- about 30% or so.

Im another for superdrug own brand. Find it's better than some of the bigger brands. I've short hair so only use half a pack at a time. Saves so much money!!!

KnottyKnitting · 07/03/2023 14:01

OK so have gone with e salon- thanks for all your help! Iwill update when done!

@KnottyKnitting any
update? Thanks 🌺

KnottyKnitting · 01/11/2024 23:19

Ooh this is an old post! I now use L'Oréal preference. Colour number 5. Exactly the right colour. Works out £8 a box with the offer at Superdrug. I saw my hairdresser recently and she was very impressed with the colour.
