If you have thinning hair how are you managing?

Wrong place to post but style and beauty seems appropriate in a roundabout way. So I wanted to ask others how are you? I’m not managing to ‘be strong ‘ or say ‘this is me’ I’m struggling daily well not quite because I don’t have to go out daily, but it’s increasingly hard. Doctors not interested and my scalp shows so I’m talking thin hair not just thinning but wondering/hoping someone out there is going through the same thing and wants to share.p or has some miraculous tip. I’m dreading the slightly warmer weather when I can’t wear my woolly hats.

My hair isn't thinning but I find it very hard to look after my hair (disability) in times that I really can't manage it- I've taken to wigs

I thought I'd hate them but I absolutely love them.

If you find them to hot, toppers also are great

It doesn't solve the problem I know - but my confidence soars when I wear them

I don't spend much, I'll buy cheap ones with good reviews on Amazon and use some talc to take the unnatural shine off, sometimes wash in fabric conditioner bc cheap ones are synthetic and I pluck/cut on my good days to fit it to my face so it's not noticeable it's a wig

Ofc now people have twigged bc I can change my hair colour from one day to the next but at first when I stuck close to my natural I only got compliments on how nicely I did my hair that day

Menopause, poor diet and COVID have caused hair fall. I use pantene root awakener and a good hair nail and skin vitamin. Root awakener I get from boots / superdrug. It's normally 9.99 but often it's half price. I can see new hair growth and I'm truly grateful. I was on the second bottle before noticed. The hair cycle can be long and frustrating.

I'm 34 and have PCPS, recently had a hair transplant. Would fully recommend as a more permanent option although not cheap.

I am using Regaine, will be getting PRP injections and once I've completed my family I'll be using spironolactone.

Where do you get the spiro?

Where do you get the spiro?

The doctor who did my transplant offers it on private prescription

Glad to hear that people make toppers work for them. How do you deal with where the front of the topper meets the scalp. There is a gap which makes it look odd and is the giveaway.

I have been taking iron and collagen since the first lockdown. My hair has certainly regrown in the thin patches, I’ve still got thin longer bits as the new growth has to catch up.
I don’t colour it and try to treat it carefully washing only once or twice a week, it tends to be dry. I usually use organic shampoo and conditioner but sometimes Cantu, which also seems to be gentle.

My doc just ignored me when I brought it up, tried a different doctor same result just like I hadn’t said anything about how concerned I am. I’ve searched but nowhere legit seems to come up with testing iron levels. This was all before covid and now it’s seriously thin even the family understands now. I search around for anyone whose hair looks similar. If I was a man I’d shave it but I can’t rock it like others I’m bad enough with what I have. If I had loads of money I’d try other avenues. I did try various hair products and tablets for at least a year nothing made a difference. I’ve searched hats as cheaper than wigs but come the summer ???

My hair went completely downhilll last year after I was ill ( I think anaemia played a huge part as I had prolonged bleeding )
I was loosing clumps of hair if I even ran my fingers through it and enough in the plughole to block it when I washed my hair .

I started using a Collagen and Iron supplement then moved onto some Hair Doctor capsuals
Philip Kingsley Elasticiser ( intensity of use depends on how my hair is , I was doing 2-3 times a week in Dec/Jan, now 1x week)

Had some of the length off as my scalp was physically painful , took from below shoulder to just above . Made a huge difference

I noticed the sides where the most noticeable thinning was have improved
Hair loss is drastically reduced .

I don't colour my hair or use heat (I;ve got a Dyson which has a low heat setting )

But when I look at women my age (56) I do see a lot of the same , so I'm not the only one .

I have androgenic alopecia and I'm on oral minoxidil and finasteride.

What you're saying here gave me some doubts to start with, too until my doctor framed it in this way:

"If you were diabetic, you'd keep taking your insulin so the symptoms didn't come back. This is the same – you have a condition that needs consistent treatment."

I totally get what you're saying, and I don't think I'd have done it either if I had to use it topically, but I now take two tablets each morning with my coffee (the oral option is showing to be more effective than topical in clinical trials), and my hair really is getting better. I'm happy to do that consistently if the alternative is the levels of loss I was experiencing before.

OP – I also use the Nioxin 3D styling products. I don't bother with the shampoo and conditioner, but the mousse and gel really do make my hair look thicker and give it the illusion of much more body.

I've tried everything for my alopecia, and I'm very critical of most products, but the 3D styling stuff they do is actually great.

@travelingtortoise am I right assuming your minoxidil prescription isn’t from a regular GP? I was discharged from care of my local dermatology dept in 2019 (tightening budgets meant long term androgenic alopecia would not longer be funded) and their parting advice was to go private for oral minoxidil. Do you know if that’s still the case?

travelingtortoise · 15/03/2023 09:07

@TeSe81 I'm not in the UK, so I'm afraid I don't know!
