Yay or Nay! Dress for birthday dinner

secular39 · 05/03/2023 20:54

Hey everyone :)

I'm having a birthday dinner with a couple of friends for my birthday. I'll be turning into my late 20's.

The restaurant we will be attending has a no causal style rule.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on these dresses?

what are you thoughts on the above dress particularly ^^? I love it but I don't know what I should wear on top of it as it's cold outside.

The bottom one is by far the nicest. The top one looks like a nightie.

TolkiensFallow · 05/03/2023 21:39

I like 3, 4 and the wedding one. If you have darker skin tone then I think the Venetia could be amaaaaaazing on you

fruitbrewhaha · 05/03/2023 21:39

The first one reminds of the nightie Rachel was wearing in friends, when the parents turned up.

They all look really light weight for the weather. When is the night out? Will it have warmed up a bit.

Paq · 05/03/2023 21:43

Yeah, they all look like something you'd wear to bed rather than a restaurant.

I think there's a difference between clothes you can pose in and clothes you can actually do stuff in. These links are the former.

JennyDarlingRIP · 05/03/2023 21:44

If you like the short dresses with sleeves have you considered apricot? Those dresses don't look like they warrant the price tag tbh.
A younger friend wore this recently and looked nice

Or something like this?

sigh I'm stuck then.

I am 5,5. Size 10 but like wearing size 12 clothes (as I have long arms). I am mixed race but with a darker skin tone.

No.3.
1 and 4 look like a nightie
2 is too old.

Johnisafckface · 05/03/2023 21:46

They all look like lingerie to me except the short one so I’d go with that one.

secular39 · 05/03/2023 21:47

@JennyDarlingRIP

Thanks Jenny but none of them are my style so to speak. I like that king of grungy but classy look sort of thing. I don't even wear dresses (only on a night out). I like All saints and COS sorts of styles.

jays · 05/03/2023 21:47

I like the third one. You might still get it online somewhere, it’s gorgeous.

DomPom47 · 05/03/2023 21:49

Silky but less nightie looking

JackieDaws · 05/03/2023 21:50

The last one in your initial post is beautiful.

Slip dresses are meant to look like nighties, like Courtney Love in the 90s.

No.

They're all bottomless brunch outfits for the live laugh love prosecco huns.

BeeBB · 05/03/2023 21:53

Honestly, it would like you have no style, no taste and more money than sense in any of those dresses in the cheap fabric.

daimtheman · 05/03/2023 21:54

The All Saints floral dress is lovely. Not with those awful boots though!

sauvignonplonk1 · 05/03/2023 21:54

Agree with previous posters, they look like nighties and you must have more money than sense to be contemplating buying any of them!

secular39 · 05/03/2023 21:56

I like all saints because of their quality. I have a few clothes from them and they have lasted ages. But if anyone knows of any other decent sites for dressed please signpost them to me.

The yellow one is the only one I liked... the first one is too scruffy and the others aren't different/special enough... seen them all before...

NatashaDancing · 05/03/2023 22:00

SocksAndTheCity · 05/03/2023 21:05

I concur with @waltzingparrot , although as much as I like All Saints I'd struggle to fork out that much for a dress I can't wash even at the sale price.

I find the slip dresses very dull and an odd fit, but then that depends on your shape (I'm not unfeasibly tall and thin, so that won't help).

They all look as if they should be much cheaper than they are. Particularly the first one - which looks like a nightdress.

Delatron · 05/03/2023 22:01

The yellow/orange would look lovely with your skin tone then. It’s just tricky to style for winter? What jacket/shoes?

NatashaDancing · 05/03/2023 22:02

Darthwazette · 05/03/2023 21:07

They all look like nightwear to me

Agreed, apart from the very short sold out one.

Eyerollcentral · 05/03/2023 22:02

If you don’t usually wear dresses what about a jumpsuit?

Ouch- harsh. They don't have much going for them, although do at least look dresses.

Bigminnie1 · 05/03/2023 22:07

I love them all- especially the first 2.

I did like this dress but I couldn't justify the price. But I could make an exception.

Stunning !
