If you are petite (stature and dress size) and you plan to wear a denim maxi skirt how do you plan on styling it?

try as I might I couldn’t find a king denim skirt in the charity shops however I have found a Massimo Duetti in TK Maxx, before I tip off the tags I need some styling ideas in terms of the weather now and when we get warmer weather. I don’t do heels but I do have wedges ( warmer weather) and I have kitten heel side knee high boots.

How are you planning on styling yours?

I'm not planning on wearing one but I reckon a good chunky wedge or platform is key. You can't wimp out on footwear with a maxi dress

How tall are you? I appreciate you said petite in stature and dress size. I am both of those things and also a shortie, hence short body. I have never managed to make a maxi shirt work for me.

If I had to, it will be with a sleeved fitting high/polo neck top worn tucked in. But for me, that is not the best look.

skirt

Niftythrifter · 04/03/2023 18:09

It’s A line rather than straight if that makes a difference.

I think you have to start by finding the right length. It's probably different for everyone but for me, it has to end at the very top of my ankle. Any longer and it swamps me, any shorter and I'm in dumpy mid-calf territory - I've just let down an old denim skirt from the 90s that fell into the second category. I admit I'm a bit obsessive about this. (I was the same with cropped trousers.)

Floisme · 04/03/2023 18:10

Sorry op my post doesn't really answer how you style it but I think that, if you get the length right, the rest follows.

Niftythrifter · 04/03/2023 18:13

I think mine will hit just above the ankle. I was thinking of wearing it with a tight ribbed top in this weather and Converse like boots and then in summer with wedges, converse and espadrilles with t shirts and blouses.

I wear mine with ankle boots or sandals depending on weather. i find a shortish fitted top works well, often it’s just a slim fit t shirt that ends just past the waistband.

minipie · 04/03/2023 18:15

I’m petite and love a maxi skirt, although I tend to prefer swooshy ones rather than denim.

I like it to end an inch or two from the floor for full leg lengthening effect.

I always wear something fitted & tucked in, or boxy and cropped, on top. Need to show my waist or else I look swamped.

Shoes - either flat sandals, wedges or canvas trainers, in summer. I haven’t tried wearing maxis in winter (would love a winter maxi!) but guess I’d probably wear trainers or flat boots.

Ok forget everything I said about wedges or chunky heels. You need flat shoes or the length will look oddly short.

I also have a leather bomber that I might wear it with.

A line is flattering for a short body.

Not sure about chunky boots but I think wedges would work well to give some height. Otherwise for ultimate comfort in summer, I will wear a simple sock shoe www.amazon.com/MATRIP-Sneakers-Walking-Comfort-Athletic/dp/B07VV432Z1/ref=sr_1_2

I do like maxi skirts but prefer them in a dress so that I am less cut up at the waist. Otherwise, I agree with minipie's approach with something fitted & tucked in, or boxy and cropped, on top.

So far I've been wearing with a vintage 1940s jacket (short and a bit fitted) and flat knee boots. I think ankle boots might work too but I just prefer knee length as they they keep the look more streamlined. I'm not bothered about trying to get some extra height through heels (but that's partly why I'm so fussy about getting the length I want). For warmer weather, I'm quite taken with the idea of a sleeveless polo neck, which is a bit of an odd choice for me as my arms and jawline are probably the two things I'm most self conscious about, so what's going on there I don't know!

So I have pulled the tags off and I am wearing it with Primark canvas baseball boots, a River Island stripe top and Gap merino wool cardigan and the normal outerwear as it’s still cold alongside some tights.

I have some pussy bow blouses that I also think will look good and play in to the 70s vibe.

Denim wedges and a cheesecloth blouse (sewn up the front or it will reveal all as you go through the day) in 1973.
